C500 ROM Update - backup?

Hi all,

I want to upgrade the ROM on my C500 so that I can use mp3s as the ringtone (wavs are too big to fit on the phone's memory which is where they have to be to appear in teh rongtone list IIRC).

How can I make sure everything is backed up (installed files, SMS, MMS, etc.) before I upgrade the ROM.

I have a horrible feeling I already know the answer ;)

Sounded ideal, but after looking at their site and some of the feedback on their discussion board it sounds like a pretty dodgy piece of software - problems restoring and backing up data, some stuff such as SMSs not backed up properly...

I was looking at upgrading to a C600 but as Sprite doesn't yet work with more recent phones I remain unconvinced.

What I find irritating is that my Psion 5mx that is over 6 years old backs up and restores perfectly, copying everything - all settings, data, programs, messages - off without problem. Easily restorable too - and all this out of the box! Is it really that difficult to do on these new phones??

Active Sync just does phone numbers and calendar and that sort of stuff doesn't it?

Really wanted to backup everything - SMS/MMS included. I know nothing will let you backup MMS messages but at least with something like Sprite you can keep a permanent copy somewhere.

Just frustrates me so much that such a good phone is limited by these silly little things. Really want to copy off messages as well as my mail file is 2.5mb...

Hmmm, the more I read about Sprite the more it seems a bit of a joke.

- updates promised for the last 6 months but nothing

- a lot of people have had problems with making/restoring backups

- if I understand correctly it doesn't work on the C600 as it is WM5! So no use when I upgrade to a C600...

Not going to pay them for software that not only seems to be a bit of a gamble as to whether it works, but can also lose me data.

So I am looking at simply noting down what I have installed, backing up my SMSes (not my MMSes as of course there is no way of doing this ;) ), upgrading and reinstalling everything.

Is it just me that thinks that for a "smart" phone about the most important function is the ability to backup and restore everything? For a phone/OS that's on about it's 3rd or 4th evolution I think the fact that it can't be backed up out of the box is very poor.

Sorry to repeat myself but I can't understand why my 7 year old Psion can do this but my much newer smartphone can't...
