I'm having trouble with the audio quality of the WM5 HTC products. I've tested the Wizard and the... erm.. big one, whatever it's called.

The upshot is that although these devices are advertised as having 44.1khz 16-bit recording capability, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'm trying to find out whether this is a hardware or software issue and only HTC seem to have answer.

Certainly T-mobile haven't a clue.

I've tried the only e-mail addresses I can find on the HTC website. No joy.

Try the WM engineering division:

WM Engineering Division

1F, No.6-3, Bau-Chian Rd,

Hsin-Tien, Taipei, 231

Taiwan, R.O.C.

Tel : +886 (2) 8912 4138

Fax: +886 (2) 8912 4135

http://www.htc.com.tw/company/index.html

Everyone else is just a local service agent / distributer.

What issues have you found with the recording?

everytime ive visited the htceurope website its always been poor - no real information and no contact information apart from "fill out this form for a replacement of your smartphone/pda" and it calculates the cost for you

this was going back from 2 years ago - unless they have been changed.

They have an office in Snowdon Drive, Milton Keynes. I have no idea if they have technical guys there or not, but give them a try.

Just turn up on their front door

"excuse me *hands over phone* can you fix this please?"

he he. that's certainly one option.

Some colleagues of mine at the BBC have been using the Blue Angel as a way to capture audio, edit it, and get it back to base for broadcast via wifi or GPRS.

For convenience it certainly beats messing about with laptops and UHF transmitters...

The recording quality of the Blue Angel is pretty good, and there's a nice little app called Luci edit that works with the right file format (mp2) and features EQ settings on record to compensate for the built in mic.

However both the Wizard and the other WM5 model (the big one, can't remember its name) don't work anywhere near as well. The end result sound like it's sampling at no more than 22khz rather than 44.1 or 32 at a push. Either way it ain't very good.

I've been trying to find out whether this is a hardware or software problem.

Thanks for the contacts folks, I didn't know there a UK site for HTC. I'll bother them.

I think HTCEurope are just a service agent for repairs, and this doesn't sound ( ahem) like a 'fault' they could fix, rather a design flaw? But let us know how you get on. They only deal with Orange / t-mob branded devices at HTCeurope, despite them all being roughly the same design...

There is also a new HTC european 'head office' in Slough - don't know if it's up and running yet but it was announced late last year as the new european headquarters.
