C500 has lost its number of characters whilst text

I have a C500, and something has changed in the past 2 days - i used to have a counter in the top left when writing a text - which would tell me eg. 56/160 - saying i'd spent 56 characters of my 160 characters in my first text.

However it's disappeared in the past 2 days -

any ideas on how i can restore this simple but much needed feature?
