I was talking with a guy at a t-mobile booth at the mall the other day. I have cingular but was checking out the phones..

He told me that if I get the unlimited data internet package from cingular I can plug my SMT5600 in to my computer via USB or bluetooth and have wireless internet access on my PC through my phone.

This would be great since I get no DSL or Cable options where I live. I get almost full bars of cell phone service and he said I could be online as long as I have a cell signal.

Is this true? If so, how do I go about taking advantage of this kind of set up? I know I wont be able to expect BLAZING speed but this may seem a viable alternative to DIAL UP which I am stuck with at the moment.

THANKS!! ;)

Yes you can set the audiovox smt-5600 as a bluetooth modem for your pc or laptop.

I have the audiovox smt5600 through cingular in the U.S. and that is the only connection I have for my laptop.

from my experience, it's near impossible to do it through usb but if you do it with bluetooth the setup is cake. There are plenty of exelent guides elsewhere on the Modaco forums to help you through this.

I'm glad you're not expection blazing fast speeds, GPRS is slower than dialup at roughly 40k/s. The new cingular 2125 (basicaly the upgraded smt 5600) has EDGE and that's about 70k/s+.

BE SURE TO HAVE UNLIMITED DATA ACCESS OR YOUR BILL WILL BE GINORMOUS(so big I had to make up a word for it).

But another question that I keep hearing is "Will I get in trouble if I do this?"

answer: nobody knows for sure, sometimes I hear yes and sometimes no. But in my experience, you won't get into any trouble. In fact, Cingular tech support helped me set it up!

Happy mobile surfing.
