wifi strength on QT S200

Hi All

Just a post to see what sort of signal quality you're getting from your Prophets wifi?

Mine is crap, in my room which is about 5 or 6m away from my wifi router with one very thin wall in between gets I can get no wifi signal from my prophet, soon as I go outside the door its back but only about 50-60% until I get nearer. In my room with my laptop I get full signal (understandable I know) but I also never had a problem getting a signal with my imate SP5.

Anyone know if one rom may be better over the other (maybe imate one is better than qtek one?) If anyone has noticed anything performance wise about their prophet (be it good or bad) I'd appreciate your comments. Its a pain in the Ass If I have to use GPRS to check my email in bed when theres wifi a few feet away!!

PS linksys B/G router, maybe switching to B only or Gonly would be better?

I have an i-Mate JAMin, and I also think that the WiFi performance is on the poor side, as I commented in my 'first impressions' post below. I bought my JAMin to replace a failing iPAQ, and the wireless performance on that was very good. When I operate the JAMin some 8 or so meters away, going through 2 rooms, I just about get a single bar of strength showing, and I have to keep turning WiFi off and back on again till it eventually connects. However, just recently I performed a test of different channels, and settled on channel 1. The signal strength seems no better, but at least it connects most of the time now, and it is far more usable.

In summary then, I think the WiFi is definitely inferior. I don't think new firmware is likely to fix this problem, as it's most likely a limitation of hardware. It is worth experimenting with different channel numbers on your access point.

Hi Gerry,

I have my access point set to B and G. I think this is the best option, as it lets the hardware 'decide' the best to use. I believe it's possible that B would offer better range, but I don't think it makes much difference.

I had a Qtek 9100 (Wizard) & sold it because of the poor wifi performance. I too had SP5 which had no problems connecting to my router. I subsequently got Dopod 818Pro (Prophet) which also had no problems with wifi but sold that for other reasons.

Funny thing is I'm now using O2 Mini S which is another version of the Wizard & wifi perfomance on it is better than all of them....maybe its the quality of the wifi modules HTC use.

Thanks guys, I think a wifi access point will drop to the lowest connecting devices level, all my connecting devices are G so I might just try B only, all I need it about 2 more ft of range so hopefully it'll work.

I'll post my findings anyway

I'm not having any problems with connections or speed.

I get a signal a good 50ft from the router through 4 thick brick walls, which is more than I'd expected (the SD WiFi I had on my M500 couldn't do it).

I guess that perhaps the problem may be poor repeatability, rather than just generally poor WiFi reception then? I can just about live with mine, that's why it hasn't been sent back. Maybe that's a mistake on my part, I don't know.
