Smartphone as wireless modem for PC?

I was talking with a guy at a t-mobile booth at the mall the other day. I have cingular but was checking out the phones..

He told me that if I get the unlimited data internet package from cingular I can plug my SMT5600 in to my computer via USB or bluetooth and have wireless internet access on my PC through my phone.

This would be great since I get no DSL or Cable options where I live. I get almost full bars of cell phone service and he said I could be online as long as I have a cell signal.

Is this true? If so, how do I go about taking advantage of this kind of set up? I know I wont be able to expect BLAZING speed but this may seem a viable alternative to DIAL UP which I am stuck with at the moment.

I did this some time ago as a test (never used). Bluetooth seems the way to go. If the USB bluetooth dongle on the PC has the right support, it can be set to see your mobile as a phone or a network card (modem for sure, network card I think).

How fast was the connection? I have bluetooth and USB so either would work. How did you go about doing it?

Seeing that you have a SMT5600 you will probably want to connect via GRPS, that will give you speeds similar to what you would get on a dailup modem. As for how to do it you can check mono's little guide which shows how to set it up as a bluetooth modem. That was intended for the c600, but should be fairly similar.

Hope this helps ;)
