Guest Jorsher Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Ok, so I'm sitting here at work (Cingular customer service...) and I see wireless access points all over the building. Why can't I even see the network? We have a crazy fast connection and I'd like to be able to download files to my 1gb SD since I have dialup at home. Anyway, I've never had problems connecting to WIFI but here I can't even find the netwrok when I enable WIFI. Any ideas? The other problem. Whenever I try to download a file through GPRS it says the file is too big. I'm not sure what the limit is but I'm guessing it's around 500k. Any fix for that? Thanks
Guest jimbouk Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 You probably can't see the networks as they have more than likely turned SSID broadcast off. The only way to connect would be to find out the SSID of the nearest point. Then you would need to find out what security they have (WEP, WPA, MAC Filtering), then you would need to see if they give guests internet access or whether you would need to log on to the network with the right credentials...
Guest Jorsher Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 dial up...whats that?? ;) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> darn...was hoping for a useful post... Since you asked, dialup is a type of internet connection. It works by using a standard phone line to call a server, which acts as an internet gateway. In some rural areas, and places secluded from cities, it's one of the few internet access options. I prefer to live away from people, such as those that post useless things on forums, and make sacrifices for it. ;)
Guest Laser_iCE Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 As someone previously said about the SSID broadcasting... What your best bet to be, would be to find the settings on your work computer, and then put those settings into your phone ... However, as well as previously stated, there's probably all sorts of security on it ;) Try Hitchhiker/WiFiFoFum to see if you can find it ;)
Guest Jorsher Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 (edited) Haha thanks laser, I'll try those out. I figured there was a tool for it ;) Actually our work computers are all connected via ethernet cables so...don't think they'll help too much with the settings? Cingular also has a stupid hole on one of the servers we connect to allowing remote desktop access that I found out of boredom... Interesting amount of ram and number of processors... Also a nice nice connection, I downloaded a 3mb file in less than a second. Edited April 1, 2006 by Jorsher

If they have all these access points, then it must be for someone to use. Just move the mouse over the wifi connection icon in taskbar and the pop up will say something like "Connected to XXXXXXXXX" But I am guessing WEP will be on!
