Saving files off internet question

Hi

hope someone can help

what i want to do is be able to download a link (approx 5k) to my c550 then once its on there ftp it to a directory on my computer, i have an ftp on my computer however whenever i select a file on the smartphone internet explorer it reports back unknown file type, can anyone help?
