Cannot Sync/Copy Audio Files

Hello

I'm at my wits end with this one. I've been Googling and trawling through forums for the best part of a day with no luck. ;) Here goes:

Whenever I try to sync audio files using WMP 10 around less than half the file is copied to the phone before the player stops and eventually aborts the copy. Part of the file, and the folder structure is created on the phone. No errors are reported.

This happens when I try to copy files using the Activesync software (4.1) on it's own and through control panel using the 'Portable Media Devices' panel. I've not managed to copy a whole audio file yet. I've also tried using Realplayer and get the same effect - it just reports that the file is not supported (my Palm syncs with this fine on the same USB).

I've tried to copy to the SD card and the phones internal memory with no luck. Other types of file copy OK - and I've updated my Copilot GPS software to the SD card without issue. I've also synced the phone and installed software without a problem.

I've tried deleting the licences on the device and that hasn't made any difference. It's also a problem with DRM protected WMA files, non DRM files, and MP3 files. It happens with audio files as small as 350K - so I don't think file size is an issue. I can't figure out whether it's the phone, the activesync software or Windows Media Player. I can think of reasons why it wouldn't be each of them though.

If I can think of anything else I'll follow up the post myself but any replies to avoid an SDA II shaped hole in the window would help a lot. ;)

BTW I've owned an Orange SPV C500 that I loved, and used to sync with WMP 10 all the time without issues. I don't want to use other software unless I really HAVE to - WMP 10 on the phone and on the PC should, and have, worked fine together.

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Just managed to copy a single audio file accross using 'Explore' from Activesync. Then tried WMP again, copied one file, got half way through the next then aborted. Nothing has copied since. I could blame this on an intermittent USB/cable problem if everything else (including the 120Mb+ of maps for the GPS) hadn't copied across just fine.

Just installed TCPMP for playing videos (before I tried the above) - I thought that might have solved the problem (somehow) but it seems not.

Will keep trying. :x

Another update:

I don't know if I'm being impatient, haven't explained my problem adequately, or there isn't anyone with a solution to this problem. Certainly, I can't find anyone with a similar problem.

I've reinstalled Windows - and applied ALL the updates, done a hard reset on my smartphone and reinstalled the basic software I use (Copilot and ClearVue) and tried again. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong as I've done this so many times before with my SPV.

Still no luck.

Hi there

Just to add that WMP on the SDA crashed after trying to find the part track that was installed after the last post.

Could it be that Microsoft hadn't thoroughly tested Windows Media Player 10 (PC version) and Windows Media Player 10 (Smartphone version) together?(!) That doesn't sound like something they would do is it?

Maybe it's the fact that it's more difficult to distribute daily updates for the smartphone platform to enable 'testing' to take place.

Enough MS bashing for now. I REALLY hope it's something I'M doing wrong. :?:

Great

I've sent an email to t-mobile explaining the problem as well. Funny, they were quite quick to get back to me with a billing enquiry. Things are a bit slower this time. I'm going to try copying the files to the card using a card reader and then playing them. I'll be willing to bet that would work - but it's not a satisfactory solution. Removing the card from an SDA is a pain in the *ss every time you fancy a change of tunes. :x

Cheers

T-Mobile were quicker than I gave them credit for in my past post. I'm going to paste here what I tried in response to something they asked me to do . (1) in this case was to try copying files directly to the phones internal memory (/storage) using 'explore' from activesync.

Here's my response:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I've just tried (1) and it worked with three files that all played. Then, I tried copying to the SD card - this again worked with all three files (I'm using random files but they all play OK on the PC).

Then, thinking the problem was (somehow) solved I tried using WMP on the PC to sync the files to the SD card. Again, it copied two files this time and aborted the rest.

Then, thinking it was just WMP that was causing the problem I tried (1) again. No luck. The process aborts with no error message and the only way to view the files is then to reconnect the phone. I deleted all the files placed on the phone by WMP (including the license files) and reconnected the phone to try (1) again. Nothing happened at all that time.

I then restarted the phone, reconnected and copied the files again. This time it worked both to the phones own storage and the SD card. But, and this may be important, I didn't use activesync. I went through the My Computer route to the phone. Just tried through activesync and it worked. (Sorry if this reads a bit funny I'm writing as I'm typing so I don't miss anything)

Looks like it must be Windows Media Player on the PC. As I said in an earlier email I've copied files to the SD card on the phone for use with the GPS and didn't have any problems.

Sorry I can't try (2) yet, and don't have time to try (3) right now. BTW I've applied all the updates to Windows Media Player. At least I have a partial solution. i.e. not to use WMP to sync files. I can't try with DRM protected files as I don't have any on the PC at the moment. As soon as I do I will try them.

---------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem. At least I know how to get music onto my phone now. ;)

Just to summarise, in case it's not clear from my last post:

I can't sync audio files with my phone using Windows Media Player. If I try to then all other methods fail until the phone is restarted.

If I don't use Windows Media Player then I can copy files to the phone and SD card without a problem (I just copied a whole album without any problems and all the tracks play fine).

This isn't as nice as a media player solutions as that enables you to choose rated tracks etc. and I don't understand why the problem exists - and that really bugs me. :??:

If anyone has any solutions please let me know - although apart from cillitbang I feel a bit lonely here ;) - this might be something you could try as well.

BTW I tried using WMP 7 as well and activesync 3.8 and 4.1 - no difference. And I'm not 100% sure that this is a WMP issue.

When you're copying files from PC to phone, you have to understand that your phone will process the information first before copying it. So, if you're trying to get a 4mb mp3 file into your phone, make sure you got around 9mb of free memory.

Since this is the case, I'd advise a card reader. Put your SD in the slot and copy directly from PC to SD. When you plug your SD back into your phone, the file should be there. That's what I've been doing ever since and almost everyday.

just going to post the work around that you have already posted well done, at least there is one person at t-mobile worth talking too! but now for next problem..... volume it is shite hows yours?

Thanks.

As for the volume problem. Mine is OK - but I tend to use it in the car with a cassette adaptor rather than the headphones. The headphone volume is OK as well though (the headphones that come with the phone are crap and I bought a 2mm - 3.5mm adaptor from maplin to use better ones and the car adaptor). The volume from the phone speaker isn't great, but neither is the sound quality either.

One thing I have found is that when using the cassette adaptor (and this was the case with the C500 as well) is that if you reduce the volume on the phone (around 45% was OK) and increase it on the car stereo, the quality improves. It sounds great then. 8)

If the audio is some you captured yourself it might be worth checking using another player - maybe try playing it on the PC (assuming you can copy it over ;) ). If it's audio you've ripped from a CD and encoded yourself it might be worth tying different settings. I always encode at 128k MP3.

Hope this helps. :P

I'm coming back to this topic as I'm getting really frustrated. I read a post that told me that Kingmax cards were not compatible with smartphones. Depite using the one I've got with my old C500 without any problems at all. And using it with this SDA II and coping a movie accross and viewing it with TCPMP - again, without any problems. I tried using another brand (a Sandisk card). Again, the same problem exists. It copies some data accross and then stops without an error - no crashes (that would be something) - nothing. Just some files, if I'm lucky, and part of a file that was being copied.

I've tried with WMP 11 now - EXACTLY the same thing happens. I belive it's the phone. Can anyone shed any light on this please?

I've hunted around for someone with the same problem - but nothing! :)
