Guest MitchellO Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 MoDaCo forum member "Ingvarr" has released a program aimed at WM5 devices providing them with support for USB Mass Storage. This allows your WM5 Pocket PC/Smartphone to be connected to a computer without ActiveSync and transfer files to and from the memory card just like a USB memory key. When enabled you cannot use ActiveSync. The interface is very simple, offering options to both enable/disable USB Drive mode and to make the card read-only (prevent writing to the card). This program is similar in functionality to Softick CardExport for WM2003 devices. Best part of this application is it's free! You can get it now from MoDaCo downloads. WM5torage forum thread
Guest sporkguy Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Many thanks to Ingvar for this invaluable application!
Guest sandburn Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 dang... i got all excited when i read "USB Mass Storage" - of course, this is an important app, but i am waiting for the day when my phone/pda can act as a usb host (or at least have true USB-on-the-go functionality) and i can access USB mass storage (a la 250 gig hard drive) FROM my phone/pda... i thought that WM5 added the Mass Storage Class Driver... but i'm a little behind and don't actually have a WM5 device... anybody heard of anything like this? can most WM5 devices actually access an externally powered USB HDD? if so, that might be just the thing to get me to upgrade... i know there was a project running a while back - DeJe's PocketPC to try and write a WM2003SE driver for just this but it got scooped up by some HDD manufacturer and is no longer supported... oh, btw - GO GATORS!!!!!!!
Guest fluffcat1 Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Sweet. Now I can unbox my Hitachi USB enabled Hifi :-) Richard

More than a driver is required. I believe the new CPUs have USB Host capability, but it enabled on most PDAs.
Guest MitchellO Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Anyone tried on WM2003 QVGA device yet? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It won't work on WM2003 because of something different in the way the USB protocols are handled. He said on the download page Windows Mobile 5 is required. Sorry, but I cant possibly make it work on WM 2003, as only WM5 allows USB protocol implementation separate from USB hardware driver - on WM 2003 Ill have to rewrite whole USB hardware drivers, and of course its not feasible. This probably explains why it is freeware compared to CardExport (for WM2003), as it doesn't require as much coding to get it working. I tried this app last night and it works great!! Too bad I just bought a 512Mb USB drive though. The 1Gb miniSD in my SP5 is almost empty ;)
Guest gilesjuk Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Toshiba E800 had a USB host cable available and it would read USB storage devices with the right driver, however it wasn't too reliable due to lack of decent driver.
Guest mitch1974 Posted April 5, 2006 Report Posted April 5, 2006 I thought the Pocket Loox 720 had USB host capabilities.
Guest MitchellO Posted April 5, 2006 Report Posted April 5, 2006 I thought the Pocket Loox 720 had USB host capabilities. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah I think it does. Edit: Gotta love a simple google search. Yes it has USB host http://www.google.com.au/search?hs=9kk&hl=...nG=Search&meta= Item 3
Guest micaels Posted April 5, 2006 Report Posted April 5, 2006 Anyone know of a similar version for 2003 SE?

Guest MitchellO Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 Is there no version for smartphone os 2003 SE? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I haven't read of one. for those looking to use this software on a WM5 Smartphone I can say that it works perfectly! Very easy to use, just open it up, click activate and you have a USB drive ;) Just press deactivate and you have activesync back ;)
