I sent an email to t-mobile to ask when they plan to introduce an EDGE network to replace GPRS. This is the response.

Thank you for your email reference 'EDGE' unfortunately T-Mobile will not be upgrading to this as we are currently under way on upgrading to 3G across the whole network with in the UK , The US Has EDGE but they have no plans to move to 3G yet .

Wish my new mda compact II had 3G now. ;)

3G is far better than Edge - in the US they don't seem to have proper UMTS so they setle for EDE here we do .

UMTS is great -why settle for EDGE

yes that is true about EDGE not being on T-Mobile

it is a shame as what would people do with the MDA's and other smartphones using the TMOB SIM and on the Web'n'Walk plans (9.99 or less a month?) unlimited!

3G is better than EDGE right ???

Yes - the only reason for edge in the UK is where there is no 3G coverage yet.

grrrrr...why does usa get the crappy end of the wireless stick. Unlimited internet is 29.99 here and no plans for TMo 3G?

I understand our network is a little larger and costlier to upgrade than the uk...but we got plenty of subscribers and would like 3g too...

Its true, T-mobile are upgrading the majority of their sites to 3g. I work for BT and we set up t-mobiles 3 g sites (i issue the orders for greenfield feasability surveys for 3g network upgrades) the orders have decreased quite a lot this year, but t-mobile assure us that they will ramp up 3g mast orders as soon as BT's circuit order to circuit delivery timeframe has been improved (again this will happen very soon)

so dont worry if you go t-mob 3 g i would think that within a year there will be a heck of a lot more 3g enabled masts.

I don't know if this is just a bug in the phone (most probably) but I have noticed that on a number of occasions my little G icon has changed to an E icon whilst at work in the Cambridge area. I wonder if T-Mobile are running trials? (I have an MDA Compact II by the way)

Cheers,

Chris

Presumeably E is Edge and T are trialling it in your area. Personally I prefer my nice U symbol ;)

Actually, the other night I noticed that my G had turned into an E. (I did the reg tweak the other week to get it to show the different symbol). When I tried to access the internet though it changed back to a G.
