Guest Pagemakers Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 I own both the universal (iMate JasJar and MDA Pro) and a wizard (MDA Vario). I was a but disappointed in the browsing speeds I was getting with the universal so I decided to test them side by side. I have the universal with a t-mobile card in it. It connects to 3G. The wizard is also with t-mobile and it connects to GPRS. Then I loaded the Sky News website. The GPRS wizard was about 4-5 times faster loading the pages. So I tied more and more pages and every time the wizard loads the pages far far faster than the 3G universal which is operating at 3G spppeds!!! Next thing was to swap sim card......No difference the wizard is faster in every way. Pity the universal's screen is so much better, otherwise I'd dump it in favour of the wizard. Can somebody please explain how the wizard can be faster? I'm confused and disappointed with the universal! PS - When connected as a modem to a laptop the universal performs fine with great 3G speeds.
Guest JBW Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 My guess is that there is something screwy with the Universal's connection or the 3G network of your operator. Assuming that everything is in working order the UMTS connection from the Universal, coupled with a significantly more powerful processor than that found in the wizard (while mhz to mhz the omap in the wizard is faster, it doesn't make up for the 429 mhz difference between it and the xscale the universal runs). Have you verified that the universal isn't also using a gprs connection? Have you verified that the wizard doesn't have an active EDGE connection (or if, for whatever reason the wizard has a wifi connection while the universal does not)? ~JBW
Guest Pagemakers Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 Absolutely. Go to a webpage and the wizard says locating, opening. The universal is still saying locating! Swap the sim cards over and it's the same. Maybe it's the processing of the screen but it is NOT faster. I have tested this with a JASJAR and MDA Pro against a Vario. The Vario is faster.

Guest fluffcat1 Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 I have the exact opposite using orange GPRS and a jasjar ( latest official rom) / qtek 9100 (most recent test rom)! But aren't these devices PPC edition? ;) MoDaCo
Guest Pagemakers Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 Both are running the latest rom. When I use it as a 3g modem via my laptop it is fine but it is slow to serve pages when I use it as a stand alone unit compared with the vario or even my sp5.
Guest Confucious Posted April 24, 2006 Report Posted April 24, 2006 Interesting, I don't have a wizard to test against but I do know my Univeral is far faster than anything I've used in the past on GPRS and slows to a crawl when I lose UMTS reception. My first thought was lack of 3G reception, is it possble that poor reception on 3g is causing lots of error correction? The fact that you say it works fine as a modem would sugest not. Mine is an O2 Exec running a T-Mob USIM which has error reporting turned off by default - is your error reporting turned on? Could you have some other software on your Universal that is doing an automatic update in the background or something? Like I say, I am very impressed with my 3G speed.
