Guest alfonzuz Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 Hello all, I'm new to Smartphones but have some knowledge on PCs. I have an SPV C500 WinMob2003 which I unlocked when I bought this 2nd hand on Ebay. Ive descovered that there is a flash upgrade available from the Orange website which Ive downloaded, however, I am a little unsure whether to install this. If I do will this reset the unlocked status back to locked? and also reset all other settings that I have applied. The second thing is, the phone shipped with WM2003. Is it possibleto upgrade this to WM2005? and if so can anyone advise me of the process? Lastly, the backup routine only permits sync and backup to Oranges remote server. Is there any 3rd party apps that would complete backup of contacts, calendar, tasks etc to the mini sd card on the phone itself, or even off phone backup to my laptop through activesync any information on the above would be greatly appreciated regards and thanks in anticipation from Alf
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 Welcome to the forum ;) If you apply the software update you will reset the phone back to factory condition which will mean all personal settings and documents on the phone itself will be removed. However the SIM card is not touched so you will still be unlocked. Even if you were this a free and simple process these days. There is no legal / official upgrade to WM05 for your phone. ActiveSync allows you to backup all your Contacts, Calendar & Tasks with MS Outlook, though not with Outlook Express nor non-MS PIMs. Orange's servers are notoriously unreliable so you're right to steer clear of that method. If you don't have Outlook you could consider Sprite Backup which is excellent for WM2003 devices.

Guest alfonzuz Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 Hi Guys thanks for your advice and help with my questions. Ill now look at Sprite Backup, see if I can get a trial to test on my phone. I dont use MS based mail clients, we use Groupwise at work and for personal use I use Mozilla, its really Groupwise I need to get a sync to. Ill do the firmware upgrade once I get a backup that I confident about - phone needs a good clean out as Ive installed tons of stuff (asyou do when you get something new) and decided that theres a lot I wont use or get benefit from - so its due a clean out. Lastly, I think I will stay clear of the armadillo illegal WM5.0 - sounds to dodgy (illegal into the bargain) but thanks for the advice re this and the warning about your experience. cheers discostu and kevinsephiroth for your sound advice regards from Alf
