Automatic deletion of emails

I have tried google and a search of the MoDaCo forums without joy.

Using a HTC Wizard (Vario) with WM5 and a separate Gmail account.

I want to check for mail every 15 minutes (now T-Mobile provide unlimited GPRS). Currently though each connection to the mail server deletes all the previously downloaded messages. I know I can move any received messages and they will not be deleted but on a 15 minute cycle I may not have checked the Vario and these email will be removed unread.

So the questions I have are:

1) Can auto delete of emails be switched off (registry edit?)

2) Is it possible to delete all 'saved' messages in one go.

3) If WM5 doesn't provide these options is there some cheap (freeware) email software that would.
