Guest thenext1 Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 I have set up a wi-fi network in my home aond sometimes I browse the internet with the phone, via wifi. The problem is that almost everytime, I turn-off the wifi and put the phone in the pocket...... when I pull it out to see whatever thing, I notice that the wi-fi is back ON and searching for the network. Sometimes even bluetooth comes up, even if I've not used it. Wi-Fi startup & shutdown is all done via the Comm Manager. I've also tried going into settings->connections->wi-fi and turning it off there, but it doesn't matter. There's another thing though.... sometimes when I enable wifi and let it attach to my network, opening PIE or PMSN leads to the phone searching GPRS coverage instead of using the already-established wifi connection...... why????? bye bye and thanks in advance!

Guest kam_ Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 a better way to disable GPRS is to change the connection type to Work (asuming your not using work already). then it won't even try to atach. If you change the apn name, it'll try to attach, then fail - still using power.

Tried that does not work, set to 'work' if i do send/recieve in email, of open IE gprs still connects and gets mail by appending a letter to the apn it tries to connect, but fails, yes it uses a small amount of power, but atleast i know i wont be hit by any large data charges then when i am out and wish to use gprs it simply means removing the one additional letter added to the apn

Guest thenext1 Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 UPDATE! Please try the following on your phone and see what (and if) happens. From the phone in normal status (wi-fi off, BT off, airplane mode off) 1) Using comm-manager, turn on WiFi 2) Using the power button menu, turn on Airplane mode 3) Now turn off WiFi using the comm-manager 4) Turn off airplane mode as well, using the power button menu.... Well when I do the 4th step, WiFi gets activated instead of shutting down airplane mode. I think this bug has some interaction with the network operations on the phone... may be the 1st time after the wifi is put off, when the phone goes on a new GSM cell, the wifi gets reactivated by mistake.... It may seem stupid, but it really is ;)

Oh, i know, but it work, and atleast i am 100% sure i am not getting unexpected data charges if things were perfect you would be able to switch off gprs the same as you should be able to wifi, the only turn it on when you wish to actually use it
Guest chaznet Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 I've noticed a nasty bug with the new firmware that's related: Activating Flight Mode will turn off both WiFi and phone signal, however, if you use Comm Manager and disable the phone (but not WiFi) the phone displays that it's in Flight Mode -- even though WiFi is running. Shouldn't say 'Flight Mode' unless all radio signals are off! UPDATE! Please try the following on your phone and see what (and if) happens.
