o2 XDA Exec sync'ing over a network problem

We've got hold of a o2 XDA Exec here at work and it's fallen to me to make it work. I've got it sync'ing quite happily with a PC (not that hard) but am having loads of bother getting it sync over the mobile network.

I've installed our certificate for our remote server and it all works great for about 2 or 3 times and then it fails with a 8503001a error which converts into a problem with the gzip compression header. Attach it to the PC, it syncs, remove PC connectivity and it works happily for another 2 or 3 sync's.

I'm falling through this at the moment (i.e. learning as I'm going) but this one has me completely stumped - any ideas?
