Hi there,

I have been having the exact same issue! I first started receiving these text messages on 29/03/06, while I was on holiday in Ireland. The message is either "Your mailbox is 80% full. Please delete some emails." or "Your mailbox is full. Please delete some emails."

The first time I received them, they were sent around 2:15 a.m. and were within 10 seconds of each other. I ignored them that time, but when I was charged 5p each on my bill for receiving the texts, I rang Orange to dispute the charges. They refunded me the 10p on my next bill, but during that billing period I received another 2 messages. I managed to finally find out how to 'disable' them, by texting back 'MAIL OFF', but was charged another 3 x 5p before I got confirmation they had been disabled.

That was Friday 07/04, but on Monday 10/04 I received yet another message saying my mailbox was 80% full. I was not charged for that though, or the next two which I received on 02/05. The ones I was charged for say 'Calendar/Task Texts' on my bill but the others just say 'Multimedia Services Recd'.

I have never got anywhere near the 50Mb storage limit of my Orange e-mail account as I only use it to send brief e-mails while I'm on holiday. It's currently using 0% of the 50Mb limit.

I have rung Orange about 5 times now about this problem as I have never signed up for any such service either. The current situation is that I was told to ring the technical support number (439) at 50p/min and he said he would get the server team to investigate.

They first said it was due to me having synchronisation switched on but this is definitely switched OFF and the text alerts for that are FREE anyway!

As far as I am concerned it is an Orange technical issue that needs resolving and they currently owe me 25p plus the

I got a text from this number after I was fiddling around in Orange e-mail (on their website). The FAQ once I have signed in via this link says the following:

"How do I use Orange Email Manager?

Email Manager is great for accessing multiple accounts easily in a single place. You don't need to sign into each account each time you access this service. You can also get a free daily summary text alert which will tell you how many emails you have. Email Manager allows you to access up to three POP3 email providers in one place and works by connecting to your email provider by POP3."

and

"How do I set up daily summary text alerts?

You must first sign in to Email Manager. Click on set up email alerts. Under daily email summary, check the On button. You can then choose the time and days you would like these alerts sent to you."

The Orange e-mail system always does odd stuff so perhaps if you have an account, sign in and see if this setting is on.

Hope this helps.

Doublevision,

Thanks for replying to my post.

I have checked the alert options on the Orange website and they are set as follows:

E-mail alerts:

New e-mail alerts - ON

Daily e-mail summary - OFF

I never receive any e-mail on my Orange account so therefore should never get any new e-mail alerts!

Calendar alerts:

Default - ON, receive via E-MAIL

Task alerts:

Default - ON, receive via E-MAIL

Synchronisation alerts :

Monthly reminder - OFF

As I previously mentioned, I never receive any e-mail to my Orange e-mail address and the other POP3 accounts I have set up in E-mail Manager have UNLIMITED inbox size. So the text messages saying my inbox is full are total crap.

The other issue of course is that the messages from 5853 were being charged at 5p/text. Nowhere on the Orange website or in my tariff does it state that text messages RECEIVED are charged at 5p, in fact in multiple places it states:

"email text alerts

Text alerts for email are free."

So Orange have still ripped me off and I want my money back! ;)

Thanks again for your post.

No worries, pleased it was of use ;) . Besides text message stating that I had signed up to the service, I have never had another.

I checked my account and for some reason Orange E-mail Manager is not set-up now (and that is the way it is going to stay). Guess it is because I did not supply any other e-mail account details.

I checked my settings as and all text notifications are set to OFF. From your experience, I will not be changing anything because I have battled with their website before (it took me about 2 years to get online billing to work!!!!). It does sound as if their is an error their end but the 50p per minute help line does not help. I looked for an address in all the help menus rather than a helpline no.

In the Terms and conditions of the Email Manager sign-up, there is "You can terminate Your Orange Online account by contacting Customer Services by email at [email protected], or writing to Orange Customer Services, PO Box 10, Patchway, Bristol, BS32 4QJ "

Maybe use that e-mail address (or write an old fashioned letter) to them laying out the problem and requesting a refund rather than using their expensive helpline.

Good luck!

I have just phoned Orange customer 'services' again as no-one from technical support rang me back. They said I would have to ring the 50p/min line AGAIN to get this resolved but I am not prepared to do that.

I have therefore put in a complaint with the BBC's Watchdog programme as I am not happy with the way Orange are dealing (or not) with this problem, which is no fault of my own ;)
