unusual unlock situation

First let me say thank you to all the wonderful posters here. I have already found out a lot of info.

Here's my delimma. I purchased a SPV c550 from the UK and had it shipped to me here in the states. It is application locked because of a hard reboot. It is also SIMLocked (or network locked, i guess).It came off the Orange network and I am on Cingular. ;) Anyway, I can't run the registry editor on the phone because I can't get past the SIMLock screen. I also can't run my SIM unlock application - I can only assume this is because of the app. lock. It starts to run and then craps out in the middle and I get an error message from Windows.

Anyway, while on the SIMLock screen, there is a text box that allows an entry up to 8 characters in length. I have seen a guy on eBay stating that he can give you a code to enter in there that will also unlock the phone - then the idea is that I can run my app unlock after that.

Does this sound right? Any suggestions? I have given thought to purchasing an Orange SIM card just so I can get into the phone and run my unlock utilities. Is this my only feasable option?
