Guest Frequency Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 I have recently purchased the SP5m and have spent some time going through this site. There certainly is a wealth of information, but I find myself more confused than when I started. Five ways to perform the same tweak, or apps that only save one keystroke over standard included apps. I'm presuming a lot of people are using the phone the way I do: activesync with exchange server when traveling, bluetooth headset and modem, play music as ipod replacement. I'll use my laptop to view MS Office documents, so PocketPC type stuff is unnecessary. Web browsing on the phone will be minimal. Two questions, one specific and one broad: 1. Do I need to upgrade to the latest ROM if I am content to sync on a schedule rather than have mail pushed? What are some of the other benefits? The list of posts related to upgraded ROM causing problems is long and I don't need that hassle for minimal gains. 2. I'm sure there are tweaks and apps out there that are simple and very useful such as extending battery life, moving temporary files to the storage card and others I have not thought of. Which ones would you seasoned users recommend to help me get the most from my new toy? ;)
Guest james_h_winters Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 you have a laptop - so you actually dont need a phone that complicated. NOT! one can never get too much tech! ;) anyway, you can first get the essentials: binarys smart explorer and task manager and oxios hibernate. then you might want to try out the OSX homescreens (somebody made a good knock off of the mac interface, pretty cool.) then you might want to try out TCPMP, skype, a whole truckload of WM5 games, and so much more. when you get pretty familiar, try tweaking. after that, you will want to start making your own programs... and fail miserably (i majored in psychology in college, so i wouldnt know a lick programming)... hahaha :P but then again, i've written a few dll's and tweaked and cracked and hacked so... ;)
Guest nastassja Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 maybe you just need to spend more time going through the forum, the questions you ask are more than explained... 1. no, read changelog (google) 2. "simple and very useful such as extending battery life, moving temporary files to the storage card and others you have not thought of" are explained in the pinned topic "Tweak for iMate SP5/SP5m", name I find very self-explanative. Did you really "spend some time going through this site"? How come you missed the first pinned topic?? ;) sorry i don't want to be rude, it's just that everything you ask is in the forum and seems to me you are just too lazy :P
Guest kam_ Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 1. no, read changelog (google) There's a changelog?
Guest Frequency Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 (edited) james_h: Thanks, this info really helps. There's so much stuff you can do, I just don't want to hack the phone beyond basic useability. For example, overclocking seeems risky and lowers battery life. I might get around to some coding, it just doesn't thrill me like it used to. Remember the Commodore 64? nastassja: no offense taken. you're not rude, you just don't understand ;) (Try reading the subject of this thread) 1. After more research, I found that upgrading the ROM was worth a try. Important stuff like microphone boost and better voice recognition made it well worthwhile. And I really like push email too! 2. Pinned topic. I thought those were supposed to be the most useful. "Tweak for iMate SP5/SP5m". Yep, I even printed it out so I could read through it and not miss anything IMPORTANT. That thread may as well be titled "How to confuse your ability to change the stupid G icon to an E, and a few other insignificant hacks". Remove all the 'blah, blah, blah' posts and you have maybe two pages of good stuff. The two hacks that I have implemented, app unlock and mail/internet to storage card I got here by following links to other sites, where they were documented in simple step by step procedures. So I guess in a round about way - you're right! :P email pushes to my phone, I can use the phone as a bluetooth modem when needed, WMP plays my music just fine. Life is good!
