hi guys

as you've probably guessed, my question is whether the spv m600 is the same thing as the imate jamin?

if so, is there a reason it wasn't released at the same time and if it's not the same, what's the difference--any help would be super--thanks for your time

Quick answer YES.

Longer answer - they are both the HTC Prophet but Imate sell them branded as Imate's and sim free with their own customisation and Orange sell them simlocked to their network with their own customisation to the rom and cabs. Its the same with all the HTC devices, but them in certain regions as Imate's. other regions as Dopods - or buy the networks own branded versions. The only real differences are a) simlock and ;) customisation to the software.

Sorry, If i can just add another question-what changes between the roms for imate jammin and the spv m600 - is either one better or worse than the other?

i want to invest in a great smartphone and am thinking about this one-(

The roms are fundamentally the same. On top of the rom are the customisation cabs that install the branding/operator settings/operator chosen apps.

For example - with Imate you get backgammon, anti-virus, pocket msn (with msn messenger) and the option to install most operator settings, but with orange you get orange's customisation and theme, and a few other add on programs. The biggest difference is that the orange device will cost between

You would only get the orange version if you took out an orange contract or if you could get on on PAYG - but they would charge a fortune for the phone and you would still have to set it up yourself. Have a look around - see if of your local networks are offering (or shortly to offer) the HTC prophet subsidised in their branded range. Otherwise the Imate JAMin is the best option

Moved to HTC Prophet section from Smartphone Main (it's not a Smartphone by the way but a Pocket PC Phone).

i see, wise words.

you don't happen to know if it's going to be released on payg do you?

as for asking if it'll be released here in italy....it wouldn't be worth the trouble. for anyone who thinks orange customer service are inept have a 5 min chat with the operators out here-you'll be sending bunches of flowers daily to the orange team!!!

if you can think of any cheaper ways of getting one though i'd appreciate any advice

cheers for all your help.

The Qtek S200 (same phone) seeps to be a bit cheaper most places. (cheaper than the Jamin that is) I live in Ireland and the chances of getting it through any of our operators is Zero too!! So I had to fork out for the Qtek.

For some reason the ROM on the S200 can't be unlocked (as easily?) so you can't put a different ROM on the device.

Considering that, from the sounds of it, you can expect zero help from your operator I'd go for an option that gives you the greatest control.

For example the ROM from Dopod was dire, and their AKU2 update was a little slow coming out, so I applied the imate ROM to my Dopod to fix the faults that it shipped with. That isn't (yet) possible with an S200

i hear you chucky.egg--i'm not sure i understand you, but i hear you.

so, the more control means being able to change the roms-or put foreign roms into a particular phone. is there a reason you went for the 818pro? just for cost reason-did you find it quite cheap somewhere? so if i discount the s200 (being difficult to monkey around with, do you have the same opinion of the imate jamin?

is this phone actually as cool as it seems? are there any down sides to it?

all help appreciated--thanks all.

I got the Dopod because money was no object (work paid ;) ) and I needed one quickly

Having had it for a few months (the last couple of which with the imate rom) I'd say it's a great choice.

I'm moving to a Wizard now, partly to test it for work, partly because it's probably going to be one of our "standard devices" and partly because it's free from T-Mobile (this is MY phone)

The only downsides to the Prophet:

No 3G

Screen is getting rough from use (no screen protector fitted)

The Prophet probably won't be one of our "standard devices" because we have to choose now, and it's only out on Orange - Voda have no plans for it, and I haven't heard from O2 or T-Mob yet.

one thing to note, AFAIK if you install a ROM on a doffernt venders phone (eg you install an imate rom on a qtek phone) you'll void the warranty.

As chucky.egg hit on, I'd definatly reccomend getting a screen protector. Lack of unlimited data tarrifs here make lack of 3g no problem for me (the slower it is the less I use it I guess)

good luck with whatever phone you use.
