Guest Smokebeast Posted April 24, 2006 Report Posted April 24, 2006 Hiya guys Big hello to you all!!. Used to be on here when i had the first orange SPV. Then went back to normal phones for a while. But now recently moved to T-mobile from 3 and have got a MDA Vario. Firstly really liking the phone. Just found out there is a 3g version coming out but you could wait forever for the perfect phone to come out ;) I'm alittle lost with what needs setting up. Back with the old SPV it was always needing to be tweaked!! I've had a quick flick through some of the posts on here about installing T mobile software?? The phone did some installing when i turned it on. Is that what their on about?? Main thing i'm stuck with is i cant seem to access the internet with GPRS. I haven't attempted WiFi yet cos there arn't any hotspots near me. But in the city there will be so i'll be on the net then. I've got the Web & Talk package so i dont think useage will be a problem :P I'm sure there is allot of things i need to do to this phone. So if any of you could help me with getting it connected to the interent for starters that would be great. Also are there any particular good apps worth getting?? Hope you can help guys Thanks Smoke
Guest toon9 Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Smoke - welcome Can I recommend getting a copy of ppcprofiles. It is invaluable in mimicking the "profiles" of the smartphone and conventional phone platforms. Like others I'm puzzled as to why it is left out of Pocket PC OS. I've only had my Vario for a short while and had no issues with GPRS. so cannot help there to be honest. (I'm posting from Vario now, over GPRS) I have found the T-Mobile online phone user guides pretty useful mind. You might want to try there for settings. They are pinned here at modaco as well. welcome again.
Guest Smokebeast Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Wicked thanks toon for the info. Will check that out. I was looking for something like that when i first got it to set up my ring tones etc!! Can i install the 2003 version or is there a WM5 version now?? I'm still not able to get onto the net with my phone. Think i'll give T-mobile another call. Also I see allot of peeps are flashing there phones with a new Rom. Is it worth me doing this?? Seeing the phones new and i dont have much on it might be the best time if i'm going to!! I remeber with the old SPV's you had to decertify them so you could use 3rd party software which wasn't signed by Microsoft. Is this still the case. Sorry for the noob questions. I'm slowly working ym way through the forum. Theres just allot to take in. Last question....Push email. Can i get this to work with my home account?? I have a work one but i work for a company which has allot of security due to the nature of the work i do. However i can access my email through a web based secure site as well. Would i be able to get it to work through that. I would also like to get all my dates and meetings etc from ym work pc. I can't install active sync on these pc's but i can get onto the secure site at home where i do have active sync...would that work?? Hope you can help Smoke
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Can i install the 2003 version or is there a WM5 version now?? Yes, I think there is only one version, but Paul has said it works on WM5 Also I see allot of peeps are flashing there phones with a new Rom. Is it worth me doing this?? If you have no issues with unexpected restarts etc then I'd leave well alone. You'll need the AKU2 ROM for Push Email, but it may well already be on the phone. Go into Comm Manager and see if you have 7 buttons, one of which should be an envelope with an arrow point at it (that's the Direct Push enable/disable button). If you have that, and no problems, then you dont need a new ROM I remeber with the old SPV's you had to decertify them so you could use 3rd party software which wasn't signed by Microsoft. Is this still the case. Nope, you just need to press Yes to continue the installation Push email. Can i get this to work with my home account?? Yes, but you'll probably have to use a service like Mail2Web.com to collect and Push your emails (unless you already have an Exchange-hosted mailbox?) I have a work ... i can access my email through a web based secure site ... Would i be able to get it to work through that. Nope, but you might find your company does Push already. Bear in mind that AFAIK you can only get "pushed" email from one account - not one from work and one from home I would also like to get all my dates and meetings etc from ym work pc. I can't install active sync on these pc's but i can get onto the secure site at home where i do have active sync...would that work?? Nope, because you can't sync through the normal webmail services. What you could do is export them from Outlook to vCal files and email them to yourself. It's not a sync (you have to export every changed item, and import it onto your device every time) but it may be the only way
Guest Smokebeast Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Chucky You are a legend!!! Thank you so uch for your help. Right I check the comms manager and i only have 4 icons, wifi, bluetooth, speaker and ative sync. So guess i'll need the AKU2 update. Is there a T mobile one or do i need a different one?? If i did use a different one will i loose anything from having the T mobile one which i'll miss?? Right i'll find out if work does push email. If not i'll set up my home one!! I did notice when i sent up my email on the phone i now have a outlook inbox and a wanadoo inbox (which i set up) I have the wanadoo one cos thats what my home email uses. (actually its my old email address, i'm with tiscali now but everyone knows the old one) When i sync'ed up my phone the inbox on my pc filled the normal inbox on my phone. So basically they are both the same thing. Have i set it up worng?? Should i delete the wanadoo one and tell the phone to retrieve my home emails and stick that in the normal outlook inbox?? Nope, because you can't sync through the normal webmail services. What you could do is export them from Outlook to vCal files and email them to yourself. It's not a sync (you have to export every changed item, and import it onto your device every time) but it may be the only way Ok so if i retrieved them from the webmail onto my home outlook. Then i could sync them couldn't I?? Thanks again Smoke

It's not a sync (you have to export every changed item, and import it onto your device every time) but it may be the only way You could carry a PST file about with you, that's how Outlook stores it's data. Get your contacts onto a local PST (as opposed to the server stored one) and mail that file home. You can then access it directly in Outlook once you open it. Slightly better than using vCal files as you won't lose any of the data that cannot be stored in vCal objects, but still a manual process. I'd make a case for installing Active Sync and plead for their approval.
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 (edited) Chucky You are a legend!!! True. True ;) i'll need the AKU2 update. Is there a T mobile one or do i need a different one?? I don't know what's in the version I downloaded yesterday, there were no notes that I spotted If i did use a different one will i loose anything from having the T mobile one which i'll miss?? You'll probably lose something, but it might not be anything you miss. TBH the imate ROM on my Dopod was so good that I'm inclined to use that on my Wizard regardless of the T-mobile ROM. What you can do, and this gets a little complicated, is to use the Extended ROM unlocker to "unhide" the Extended ROM, then copy all the CAB files from there. Then if you put a new ROM on you still have access to all the T-Mob stuff too. When i sync'ed up my phone the inbox on my pc filled the normal inbox on my phone. So basically they are both the same thing. Have i set it up worng?? No, that's what it should do, but maybe not what you need it to do Should i delete the wanadoo one and tell the phone to retrieve my home emails and stick that in the normal outlook inbox?? Could do, but then you can't sync with your work emails Ok so if i retrieved them from the webmail onto my home outlook. Then i could sync them couldn't I?? Yes, but "retrieving them from webmail" is not quite as easy as you make it sound Fraser's suggestion makes a lot of sense. If you can use USB memory sticks at work (possibly not if security is tight) then you could use WM5torage to turn your phone into a USB memory stick and use that to transfer the files back home for sync'ing. That way you dont need to install activesync, and you dont need a memory stick either Edited April 26, 2006 by chucky.egg
