Guest JOEJOETHEJOEY Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 I'm getting my i-mate SP5 tommorow morning, just wanted a brief run down on what to update/tweak/install first. I know there's a new ROM update on the imate website, but is it worth updating yet? Would really appreciate a quick list of steps to take first. Is it easy to decert the phone to install unsigned programs? Thanks in advance!
Guest ljames28 Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 I wouldn't mind some help on this too, should be getting my sp5 sometime this week hopefully.
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 The pinned topics at the top of this section are your first port-of-call. The application unlocking process is a little trickier but easy when you read the instructions. You'll find them in the 'SP5 Tweaking' thread. As push email is of little interest to me I've not updated the ROM, either with the Orange or iMate versions. Another reason is the difficulty in app. unlocking after applying them.

Guest kam_ Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 If you're getting the I-mate then definately update the rom. Just register your IMEI at club imate and do it all oficially. Forget push email, but its worth having for the new IE alone. The i-mate rom can be app unlocked exactly like the old one so there's no worries there. Only the new Orange rom's have a problem being app unlocked, which doesnt apply to you! If you're new to 'smartphones', and if you have the time to play, i suggest you do what i did. Read, and install whatever looks remotely interesting.. Once its installed, play with it and make a judgment on if it actually is usefull. After you've decided all the things that are usefull, hard reset (it sets it back to factory) and install only the usefull stuff. Also if its an i-mate your buying, and you only want to use english, use the NRE rom (the one with swedish etc) - u'll understand when you login to i-mate to get the new rom. It leaves slightly more space free on your phone than the WWE one that comes by default. You should also download a copy of the WWE software pack (which contains the antivirus and games) that comes pre-installed. If you do a hard reset you will need this to put those apps back on. I would seriously consider removing the antivirus too. There are maybe 5 virus's for smartphones and i wonder if any of them are even compatible with WM5 lol. The AV slows the phone down ALOT and leaks memory like a rusty bucket leaks water. If you're a bit carefull (not even much) you won't have to worry about contracting any virus's. Anyway if you plan to go the 'install everything' then hard reset and 'install usefull' then when you hard reset and install the WWE pack you will find all the install files for the games and AV in the program files directory. Then you can only install the games and leave the AV.
Guest JOEJOETHEJOEY Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 (edited) Excellent. Thanks for that. The problem is, my imate should have been delivered this morning (the supplier said guaranteed before 1pm). It's now 12:30pm and nowt!!!! I'm leaving on holiday tonight too!!!! Really wanted to take the phone with me and play around with it. Doh doh doh!!! Wish me luck!! Still have 30minutes until I blow my top off!!! Edited April 26, 2006 by JOEJOETHEJOEY

Well I ordered from Expansys and they used Royal Mail's special delivery which is supposed to be guaranteed before 1pm. Well, I just checked the tracking again on their website and it strangely says that it's been delivered. But I can't see the proof of signature until 72 hours. What's the use of that when I'm leaving tonight!!!! It's either gone to the wrong house or some postie is having a whale of a time playing with my SP5!!!!!!! Arrrghhh!!!!!!! I can't believe this, that's already put me in a bad mood for my holiday!! :P Can't wait to go through all the hassle with complaints when I come back in two weeks!!! Not!!!!!! Arrrghhh!!!!
Guest JOEJOETHEJOEY Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Would you know it!!! Just when I complain to Royal Mail and Expansys, the postie decides to knock and give me a pile of letters and a box. "Bit late aren't you?" I said.......no reply as he trodded along to the next house....... And to my suprise, it's the imate!! Doh!!! Just need Expansys to reactivate my sim card for it. Phewwwyy!!!! Well don't have much time to install stuff. Just glad I'll have it to play around with on holiday. ;) Strangely, the IMEI isn't recognised on the imate website so I can't register. :P I guess I'll have to update the rom when I come back. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
Guest Frequency Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Great topic! I started the same one a week ago and got no responses - Glad you're having better luck. When I registered on the i-mate website, it said my IMEI was already taken. Checked my email the following day and found that I was in fact registered. So it sounds like Push email and the new IE are the only good reasons for upgrading the ROM? Maybe I'll just remove the antivirus software to free up some memory and be done with it! ;)
Guest JOEJOETHEJOEY Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 I've just had time to sit down and really look into sorting my phone out properly. Just checked my ROM version and it's already the latest: 2.5.331.2. But where can I set up the push email service bit? What email services does it support?

Just checked my ROM version and it's already the latest: 2.5.331.2. But where can I set up the push email service bit? What email services does it support? Your email service needs to support it. If its an exchange server you set it up like normal, and from the com manager click the push email icon. If it doesn't support it (probably because its POP email) you need to sign up with a push email provider. You can try mail2web (http://live.mail2web.com/). The account is free, and it'll even pull your POP3 for you too. You then do push to their exchange server. Its got a really high storage limit and does atachments upto 100mb. I have to say its a great service for free, but if like me you have ALOT of other email addresses you may not want to have one more (even tho it can agregate them for you).
Guest JOEJOETHEJOEY Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 Hmm, I'm not too sure what you mean. The EMAIL (the envelope with an arrow pointing into it) icon in the comms manager is not selectable. If I sign up for the mail2web service, how do I set it up on the SP5? Thanks for the help!

If its not selectable then you don't have exchange email setup, or the exchange server you have doesnt support push email. I don't use push myself, but if u do a search on here there is at least one description on how to use mail2web with push.
Guest Snooginsguy Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 (edited) There are instructions on the mail2web site as to how to configure the Exchange Activesync on your phone. You don't set up an email account like you would with a pop3 or imap account, you actually configure a server source thru Activesync with the mail2web server. It's pretty easy, and like I said, they have the configuration settings on the website. Edited May 15, 2006 by Snooginsguy
Guest Tech Posted May 16, 2006 Report Posted May 16, 2006 you might wanna check out my WMP Remote app for remote controlling WMP on the PC via usb/bluetooth/wifi - sorry, shameless self promotion hehe yeh i have an imate sp5m and still pretty excited - even though I've had it since November!! ;) do update the ROM - has many enhancements such as IE and now allows you to view/expand framepages! (Ideal for online banking) App unlock is not a problem, same procedure as last time - I think I used SDA Unlock and a quick reg tweak setting - think it was stuck on one of the pinned topics somewhere... or google it!

Guest JOEJOETHEJOEY Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 you might wanna check out my WMP Remote app for remote controlling WMP on the PC via usb/bluetooth/wifi - sorry, shameless self promotion hehe Will it just allow you to control WMP, can it also stream the content to the phone? e.g. listen to the MP3 and watch videos stored on the PC on the phone as well?

Guest Tech Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 it doesnt stream anything to the phone - it only controls WMP on your PC - like a remote control. Perhaps maybe future version it may allow you to stream content to the mobile device!
Guest sporkguy Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 I guess us Mac user's are a sarcastic bunch. :P Well we do like to read ahead so not to look like a tit ;) oh and.. there's no apostrophe in "users" son ;)

Take it easy. ;) However, if we are going to start getting picky and pointing out punctuation mistakes, then here's my attempt. There should be a full stop at the end of a sentence. The start of a new sentence should start with a capital letter. Therefore, the correction should be as follows: Well we do like to read ahead so not to look like a tit . :P Oh and.. there's no apostrophe in "users" son. ;) I guess us Mac users are all tits. LOL. Call it a draw? ;)
