Who's left Orange for T-Mobile?

I left O2 for T-Mobile and explained exactly why I did.

In reply, he mentioned that they had a £7.50 data bundle, and that 200mb would be "all I need, looking at my current usage".

I then pointed out that the reason I didn't use data at the moment was because it was so horrifically expensive. And that I was quite sure I'd use more than 200mb a month.

He didn't seem convinced, but offered me 50 minutes and 500 texts for £8 a year, to keep my account (or less than that and keep it for free, which was interesting...) I'd have taken him up on that, but wanted to port my number, so had to ask for a PAC. Presumably what they wanted to avoid.

On the subject of data usage i personally use between 50MB a month, give or take, on average. The annoying thing about caps though are the odd occasion i go over, as I did in August, and burned 265MB of data. Clearly Voda, O2 and, heh, Orange's plans are useless in this case.

I choose my minutes and texts to ensure i dont need to worry about going over my monthly line rental costs, i dont see why data *still* isnt charged in a similar fashion across the industry...

Mono raises a good point and despite what Jimbo says, I don't always download porn movies (It struck a cord tho, as yesterday I did download a 12Mb porn film just to see if I could - the answer is yes but to jerky to stream prperly but if saved firsty it is very good quality but probably best not to watch on train on way to work!

The point is, I don't actually know how much data I use now. T used to put it on the bill and I used to use 4 - 500Mb per month but it could have gone up (or down) since then. But effectively unlimited data means I don't have to worry about it - which I like ;)

And I read Playboy for the interviews...

It has been discussed many many times before... but its only now that all the networks are actively trying to get more data income. Until recently voice was king - but now shareholders are demanding returns on 3g licences and network infrastructure costs.

You have to remember that "3" launched as the all singing all dancing hi speed network, only to have to forget about high spend customers in the early days and offer ridiculously cheap voice minutes to attract a customer base. Now that the UK mobile market is pretty much at saturation and now that users are more sophisticated than they were, the networks are all trying different ways to earn maximum data revenue.

T are going for cheap, unlimited to get market share, the others seem to be saying we want to compete but we either wont do unlimited or we will charge more for the priviledge. I know O have spent a fortune in recent months setting up a new business sales initiative trying to get companies to sign up to their deals, as I reckon they think corporate data is more profitable.

The problem, of course, is that its actually likely a lot of these caps were developed by looking at current customer usage across the board. Even adjusting for lower usage due to cost its easy to forget the majority of mobile phone users will own Sony Ericssons and Samsungs and all the rest. The poor effort at web browsers on these handsets would probably result in much lower usage than us Windows Mobilers! Orange in fact tried to launch some horrendously complicated but dedicated Windows Mobile data tariffs, specifically with push email in mind (unsurprisingly they didnt take off!).

Of course there is also the problem that large numbers of mobile users are still scared of data charges, "doesnt it charge me for how long i'm online?". " whats a megabyte?", "how many webpages is that?". Its just not as quantifiable as minutes or text, Tmob and 3 have both woken up to this fact with rediculously high caps (1GB is fine for mobile usage, unless you spend all night every night on youtube! Modem is another matter though...). The other networks though have picked these nominal caps that, in my case at least, i *might* go over, maybe, some months.

In terms of recovering losses over the 3G license fiasco, again, Tmob and 3 have got the right idea for those reasons above. In this time of a hugely competetive mobile market people are scared of huge bills and generally strive for the cheapest possible deal, even if it requires intricate systems such as cashback. 3 and Tmob have sat back and said 1 price, no additional charges (except for extreme cases), we start recovering cash. Tmob have taken this a step further with their Flext tariffs. Flext+WnW: use your phone how you like, to your liking, and pay us £x each month.

But back to the current topic of this thread! From a WinMo perspective, a data package with a cap in the 100's of MBs is going to be too low due to the large number of "prosumers" using these devices (the rest of the owners probably being in the "scared to run up a huge bill" bracket ;)). As such, Orange, O2 and Voda lose here to Tmob and 3!

wonder if it will happen in the uk as well as i holland but vodafone and kpn here offer unlimited internet for under 10 euros where as t-mob and orange-mob charge nearly 30 euros and here t-mob are starting to block certain types of sites , t mobile are not as cheap as you think well in holland they are not ;)

Looking for some advice here.

I've been with Orange for about 9 years now (including a years PAYG) and have had smartphones since they came out. Started with the Orange SPV (anyone remember that), then the Motorola MX220 and then onto C500, C600 and my latest phone - M700. Enjoy all the functions but feel that I am limited in the use of the phone due to the data charges.

My current montly bill is £35+ (75 Text messages, 100 Landline minutes and 175 anytime minutes + insurance). I always end up using more minutes and about 4mb of data (A few web pages, and downloading a few emails a month)

My contract has about 6 months to run (of the 18 months) but I am getting fed up not using the data like I feel I could.

So what do I do? I want to keep my current phone (I use the wireless, GPS etc ) but I am fed up with orange's lack of decent data bundles.

Anyone got any advice?

Well Orange now do a 30MB bundle for £8/month if thats enough for you. Alternatively T-Mobile do 1GB for £7.50 a month and 3 for £5 a month! All three networks seem to have half decent tariffs at the moment so have a shop around and see what you can find :(

Vodafone also do 120Mb for £8 / month

Once you start using data a SmartPhone/PPC can get through 30Mb easily. lots of people find 100Mb to be plenty but I prefer the freedom of 'unlimited' (Mine has a FUP of 3Gb for £12.50/month) which leaves T or 3

It depends on your reception and usage. I know one person who is happy with 3 - everyone else I know who has tried them left at the earliest opportunity. T are great - if they have reception where you use your phone and flext is ideal for me Flext35 is £30/ month at the moment for £180 worth of usage to be split any way you like between texts at 10p and voice 20p/min or MMS 20p so you get up to 900 mins or 1800 texts. If you use less you might be able to get away with flext20 for £15./month plus the £7.50 add on (1Gb FUP).

I don't know what Voda or 3 do in the way of mins/texts.

Your best option as you have 6 months to run tho, might just be to get O's 30Mb add on for the remainder of your contract as you are going to have to pay O anyway, and then decide. that should also give you an idea of how much data you want to use. You never know, you might even find 30Mb enough!

If you do go to another operator you could always sell the phone you get on ebay to recoupe some of the costs if you want to keep your M700.

That was one thing I was looking at would be to sell the phone I get. From looking at it, the N95 on those taffifs seems to be either free or very cheap and I should be able to get a decent price for it.

From the one week I did use data, I racked a bill up of £110 on orange, having used 33mb in a week so I have a feeling the 30mb wouldn't be enough. Plus I would always be worried about going over it.

Anyone had any problems purchasing a contract from T but continuing to use a phone supplied by Orange? I am tempted to upgrade to WM6 anyway so any orange features should disappear soon.

Guess I need to check what T's signal is like in the Lincoln Area and find out how much it will cost to leave orange early.

You will need to unlock the phone first. Apart from that their should be no problem. I was orriginally using an O2 Exec (Universal) on my T contract until I bought an Ameo off eBay.

If you use 33Mb in a week then the Voda 120 Mb won't be enough either but I have never been charged anything unexpected with T. The only exttras I have ever paid are for competition texts which I new about or when using abroad. Apart from that, all my texts, voice, MMS and data are covered and now I've been with them over 18 months I'm only paying £20.51 a month all in!

The other person was from Woking - seems like we might have found where 3 works! Now I live in Woking I might see if 3 is Ok for the g/f.

Just spoken to Orange. £180 to cancel my contract with 6 months to go and just the standard bundle fair although they are meant to be releasing some new bundles shortly which they are currently trialling with their small business customers. Not sure how much marketing talk this is or if actually, they may have seen the light.

I'll think about this over the christmas and if nothing appears, time to order a new phone with T mobile and then sell it to cover the costs of cancelling the Orange contract.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

For as long as I can remember O have been going to release new fantastic data bundles 'next month'. Apart from the few lucky people who got OWU nothing ever seems to come of it so I wouldnt hold your breath....

Well, now Orange will be gone in no time and fused with T-mobile, I "had" to switch. But had a great offer from T-Mobile

Certainly not in the UK! What's happening where you are?
