Not enough memory to install new programs

My device storage is down to about 2MB free but a I have a 1GB card with plenty of room. I want to install my clearview program which needs 3.5MB - I assumed I could put this straight onto the card but it wont let me get as far a choosing to install on the card as it says the phone's memory does not have enough room at the active sync stage. Can I install straight onto the card or do I need to free up this space on the phone? If the only way to do it is by freeing space up on the phone i am stuffed as I have removed all programs off the phone so all the storage must be taken up by messages, contacts etc - or can anyone tell me if I can get email messages, contacts and anything else to be stored direct to the card. I'm having the same problem too..

I Have more than 20 Mb free space on my T-Mobile SDA w/ 1 GB Mini SD card. Need to install an application ~14.5Mb in size.

But, install says i've less than 12.75 Mb left.

Any help is greatly appreciated...
