Hi!

I'm just having a few issues with my Orange SPV M5000, and wondered if someone could help?

First of all:

I want to use my SPV as an alarm clock, but the poxy tones supplied with the phone for the "Reminders" functionality don't come close to waking me up. You can change the tones under Settings > Sounds and Notifications, then selecting "Reminders" from the "Events" drop down list - but there's nothing in there that I want to use. I therefore downloaded a number of different sound files to my M5000 (in wav, mp3 and midlet format) and none of them appear in the drop down list.

Additionally, the Reminders and Incoming Call sounds seem to be partioned off from each other for some ridiculous reasons! In other words, there are some Incoming Call sounds that would do as my alarm clock, but I can't select them because they aint listed against the "Reminders" event. Just seems so dumb to me!!

I then tried to search the phone to find out where the alarm tones are stored - I did a search for "Ringer" which is one of the ring tones on my advice, both on the M5000 search functionality, and by searching the device using active sync - but both searches returned 0 results....(please note that I have double checked to make sure I'm search all hidden files and subfolders, still no joy).

What annoys me is that it is such a simple thing to want to have to do - and Orange, or HTC, have made it unnecessarily complicated?! Unless there's something I'm missing and it's just a problem between the keyboard and chair??

Secondly...

Anyone know how to unlock the device so that I can run some unsigned apps? In order to try and resolve the problem above I tried to download some third party alarm clock application from handago....I checked to see if the M5000 was listed as a compatible device and it was....disappointly when I tried to install it I got a message on the device stating that installation had failed because it was an unsigned app *sigh*

Any ideas or thoughts on the above would be greatly appreciated....

Question 1:

I'd recommend using Stoptime if you are wanting to set alarms. Way more reliable plus the alarms loop until you stop them. Also has the deadly "snooze" button. You can use wav/mid for the sound, maybe even wma and mp3.

Question 2:

Two different things are confusing you. The app you downloaded was for unlocking the phone to work with any SIM card. What you want is a way to run "unsigned applications". Ironically, yes, the phone unlocker is itself unsigned. To get something signed you must pay Orange (etc) lots of money and actually test the the software on certain devices. They then "sign" the binary and the phone checks this against an encrypted certificate and deems it too be "safe".

Hi,

Alarms:

The SPV alarms have to be wav and live in the \windows folder. You can copy new wav files in there. Yes, the alarm clock on Windows Mobile is pretty pathetic - the Psion 3a (1993) was better. However, it is better than it was.

Ring tones :

These are also stored in \windows (or \windows\rings if added by the user). Notably these can be wave or media player files. Consistency strikes again (not).

The issue with signed executables - this is a complicated one. Unsigned aplications can be loaded on an M5000 without any hacks, you are just asked whether to accept them when you install.

However some exceptions:

- applications can sometimes be signed in a way that Smartphones or other devices understand, but not PocketPCs like the m5000. ActiveSync removes / adjusts some of these signatures, but if you install directly onto the device, this doesn't happen and hence the installs don't work.

- Some programs use a kind of component that did not use to need signing on Windows Mobile 2003, but does now, and cannot just be 'waved through' by the user in the way other stuff can.

Generally an application has to specifically support Windows Mobile 5 and be installed through ActiveSync to be guaranteed to install OK.
