Guest Smokebeast Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Hiya guys Had the phone for about a week now and have got used to using a pda style phone again!! At the moment it had the stock T mobile Rom 1.6.2.4 WWE (15/11/05) Now i was wondering if you could tell me what are nessary things to have and other things which are cool :-) Regedit would be one of the top of my head and maybe some kind of file explorer. I have something like that on it now (came with it) but not sure if its powerfull enough. I do use it to browse the web. Would getting Opera be benifical?? I do like games so guess getting a few of those on here would be nice too. I saw Age of Empires a while back are there others like that?? Sorry for the newbie posts but still getting to grips!! Thanks Smoke
Guest chucky.egg Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 I'd recommend Resco File Explorer (commercial app) which comes with a nice Reg Edit plugin I haven't bothered with Opera, but was thinking about a different browser. I tend to use it in Landscape mode when browsing forums, but PIE in Portrait mode for many sites is just fine For games I would alwasy download a trial first, some look great but play badly.

Not meaning to hijack the thread and this could still be useful to the OP .. What alternatives do we have / do people recommend to PIE and Opera (if any)? I am looking for a replacement for PIE but don't really want to use Opera.
Guest Phil Lee Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 The software I use most on my Vario is Pocket Breeze combined with iLauncher, Pocket Weather and Contact Breeze. I know they are all commercial programs produced by the same company (SBSH) but I have found them to be well worth the money. The latest version of Pocket Breeze is particularly good. It is a Today screen plugin that is a big improvement over what is on the device by default. With version 5.1 it makes the phone a lot easier to use one handed. I'd also recommend a small, free task management program called InClose Mobile which is very useful. I found this particular program to work better than some of the other similar programs. It improves the functionality of the close button. Another useful, free program is called smartskey. It allows you to add extra functions to the soft keys. I use it so that a long press of the left soft key opens the Start menu and a long press of the right soft key mimics the OK button. It makes the Vario a lot easier to use one handed.

I know they are all commercial programs produced by the same company (SBSH) but I have found them to be well worth the money. I use Spb Diary, Spb Weather (commercial) and cLaunch (freeware) I ditched Spb PocketPlus because it was getting bloaty and I suspected it was the cause of a bug. It turned out NOT to be the cause, but by then I'd got cLaunch and never bothered going back I'd also recommend a small, free task management program called InClose Mobile which is very useful. I've tried vBar, SmallMenu and Magic Button, but all of them had flaws or introduced unwanted (by me) behaviour. Another useful, free program is called smartskey. It allows you to add extra functions to the soft keys. I use it so that a long press of the left soft key opens the Start menu and a long press of the right soft key mimics the OK button. It makes the Vario a lot easier to use one handed. Ah, another new one to me. Will look into that. The biggest problem I had moving from a Prophet to a Wizard was the lack of a hardware OK button While I think about it can I also recommend: 1. The Imate ROM. Very stable, even if you dont want/need Push Email 2. Sprite Backup. I wiped my phone last night and, using a Backup and direct server sync'ing, I had the whole thing recovered in under 10 minutes. Quick and easy, and without a PC. What I do is make a "bare metal backup" - install apps, mail accounts, ringtones, themes, tweaks etc, then backup BEFORE putting any PIM data on it. That way when I re-sync it doesn't duplicate Contacts and Appts etc.
Guest Phil Lee Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Ah, another new one to me. Will look into that. The biggest problem I had moving from a Prophet to a Wizard was the lack of a hardware OK button Smartskey really is very good. It reproduces the behaviour of the Prophet buttons which is great for one handed use. It makes you wonder why hardware buttons for Start and OK weren't included on earlier PPCs. Going back to the original post, I use Total Commander as a file browser. I'd also recommend installing TCPMP as a general media player for DivX files. Edited May 5, 2006 by Phil Lee
Guest daftveggie Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Magic button for the task controls, TCMP for all media files, total commander for file and reg editing. I have a quick question: Is the Qtec ROM the only one with the bluetooth stereo headset profile support or does it come on the Imate ROM too?
Guest Webreaper Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Don't bother with Magic Button - it causes as many problems as it solves. Smartskey - couldn't recommend it enough. I'd also go for PocketMusic (best player I've found - even the free version), GPRS Monitor, Hudson Phone Dashboard to monitor the calls, Agile Messenger (far better than PocketMSN). I also installed Today Time (http://www.pocketpt.net/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=6&t=8229) - it's a more compact today date/time plugin than the standard one. Synchrotime is handy for updating your clock from the 'net. WM5torage is superb to use your phone as a USB key. TaskPlus is a superb extension to show active tasks and appointments on the today screen, and is much lighter than the offerings from SPBH. Oh, and if you need to access PCs remotely I'd recommend LogMeIn.com - their PDA client is superb, it's more flexible than terminal services, and allows you to have your entire desktop visible in landscape mode. Guest drblow Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 I would also recommend the sbsh suite - if you use your phone as an organiser then these apps make the today screen invaluable ... plus their beautiful skinning ability! Along with them I'd recommend Pocket Informant, it's a clandar replacement that integrates well with pocketbreeze. With my M600 I can edit any appts I need one handed, without really needing to leave the today screen. I'd also recommend Wisbar Advance, as the task management is good & the skinning is wow!! ;)
Guest tefal la Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 Does anyone know if there is any personal finance software out there? The only one I found was quicken but they do not support the uk.
Guest Tee Tee Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 Opera Mini is a fantastic free browser - version 2 has just been launched and I wouldn't be without it!
