Guest spacehog Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 (edited) hey guys, im relatively experienced with windows mobile devices, but this issue has me totally stumped. i had my sp5m connected to active sync without a hitch last night, but by mistake prompted windows to install a PPC version of skype on the phone (obviously this doesnt work). anyways, instead of waiting for the transfer to finish and for the phone to then reject the install file due to incompatibility, i cancelled it mid-transfer and everything "seemed" ok. this morning I get up and disconnect the phone to answer a call. when I try to reconnect, it keeps giving me a "sync failed, please reconnect device" everytime. i tried rebooting the pc as well as the phone, to no avail. i have noticed that my remove programs application is completely corrupted. there isn't a single app listed there and none of the menus are accessible (ie. even the soft keys which are now blank dont do anything). im afraid its some sort of registry corruption, but i dont know where to look to resolve the issue. any advice would be much appreciated! I had the same thing after installing PPC skype on my Qtek 8310. For me a reboot didn't help. My only option was Hard reset the device.
Guest spacehog Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 well since the app didnt completely install, you think there's any way to reverse any crap that was transferred midway through? ive been looking fo any trace of skype in the app mgr and program files folders but nothing... i really dont want to resort to a hard reset cause i have so many registry hacks and the phone is running perfectly otherwise. thanks!

Sorry Spacehog you'll really need to Hard reset your device. It happened to my SP5m 2 times already. If you notice, you won't be able to do the majority of things related to settings, you won't be able to even change your ring profile, or modify any settings under the Settings menu. It's a sort of a fu**in little Bug in the CAB manager, that prevents the ENTIRE phone from working correctly. It's a SHAME that one needs to totally hard reset its device, ONLY for a wrong installation. Its ridiculous. I really can't stay quiet when I see these software engineering errors come to surface. Its like when Pocket IE hangs up all the phone when rendering a page, a VERY COMMON issue, and you can't kill it because you can't reach the task manager due to the start menu not showing up (IE is sinking the CPU). This could be solved by simply giving the start menu process an higher priority. And if you manage to get to the task manager, you'll find that the task manager hangs, too, waiting for IE to be ready. These WM devices, after you've unlocked them, are more fragile than porcelain...... But what that makes me angry, is that obviously, I was the 1st in the world to experience these problems. No one in this forum or wherever other place, knew about this...
Guest spacehog Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 hey thenext1, thanks for the reply. it's actually quite a coincidence, you pointed out the other major problem ive experienced sporatically on the phone: IE crashing when rendering graphic extensive pages. just tried accessing settings in profile, and like you said, totally screwed. such a bummer. anyways, thanks again for the advice, ill keep it in mind next time i try and fiddle around with skype on this thing...
Guest chaznet Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 Makes you wish Microsoft hadn't stripped the ability to backup your device via Activesync from Smartphones! hey thenext1, thanks for the reply. it's actually quite a coincidence, you pointed out the other major problem ive experienced sporatically on the phone: IE crashing when rendering graphic extensive pages. just tried accessing settings in profile, and like you said, totally screwed. such a bummer. anyways, thanks again for the advice, ill keep it in mind next time i try and fiddle around with skype on this thing...
