Guest bluebunny Posted May 21, 2006 Report Posted May 21, 2006 Hi all, I am a new to the forum, so please be gentle. what I am after is a bit of advice on connecting my wired GPS, to my V1640. I bought a tomtom compatible mount for it and already had the tomtom wired reciever, and tomtom5.0 I found it would load, so downloaded the update to 5.2 from tomtom. no problems I thought. tomtom boots up, and there message is "no GPS device" I have tried the tomtom wired choice and the other nmea wired reciever on all channels it shows in there, and a baud rate of 4800 and 9600. I then have tried the registry bit to open up GPS connections and tried some of them but there I am stuck. Programs com's 0-9 and GPD 1-9 and then hardware com 1-9 and a baud rate. in the choice of other recievers it says: QCT data interface whats that? is it the same as GPD in the GPS settings? i love TLA's (don't you?) I'm guessing as the PC is using a USB port and not a com port so to speak I need to configure this. any help will be gratefully received. thanks in advance Simon

Guest bluebunny Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Doe the tomtom gps receiver you are trying to use have a mini USB connection? HI, no it doesn't it is the normal rj11 cable into a holder. see here for details for the holder. http://www.pdamods.com/products.asp?cat=126 actually it does say charging for your bluetooth reciever, wonder if that is the problem? thanks
Guest Markda2000 Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 So your GPS is bluetooth or not? From what I understand you are trying to connect the PDA to the GPS unit via the cradle. If this is right, and you have a none bluetooth GPS receiver then you are onto a non starter as the RJ11 connection is for power to charge the GPS only and not for data transfer to the PDA. If you can clarify your GPS I will see if I can help you more.

I have spoken to PDAmods where I bought the cradle from and he said it would receive data. Mind, he said i also needed a PS2 cable. the GPS is the tomtom silver diamond shape wired receiver, with a rj11. I worked fine in the cradle for my SPV2000. that was a proper tomtom cradle though and not a third party knock off.
Guest Markda2000 Posted May 26, 2006 Report Posted May 26, 2006 That is interesting. When I first got my MDA Pro I looked everywhere to get a usb to ps2 lead so as I could connect up my wired GPS to my PDA, but could not find any - in the end I went out and bought a Bluetooth GPS. Now I still have my wired GPS in my van but it is reserved solely for the use of my CLie. If you know of anywhere that sells the cables please let me know. Regarding your current situation with the cradle I am afraid it is beyond me.

I have managed to find a buyer for my SPV2000 and wired GPS receiver in the shape of my dad, so this will pay for the bt receiver. If i find anything for wired GPS, will let you know. but one last question??? I can use my bt car kit and bt receiver at the same time can't I? If not i will be really upset :) have a good weekend Simon

With early versions of Tomtom 5 though in my expereience after using the bluetooth handsfree kit the update of the mapping lagged behind realtime by about 30seconds or so. This was supposed to be rectified in the latest updates from Tomtom. 5.21 was the latest version I believe.
