New Smartphone user and Outlook/ActiveSync/Exchange

Hello,

I am a new smartphone user (1 week) and have not figured out everything I want to do with the phone. I have a Qtek 8310 with the new AKU2 rom build. A couple of questions ...

1) Is the only way to update the Outlook email client through ActiveSync?

2) ActiveSync is only a phone-to-computer connection, not a phone-to-internet connection. Am I correct?

3) My IT department will help me setup AUTD or push email through Exchange - it is not at all clear to me how to set this up through the phone. I can figure out how to enable push email on the phone (in the Comm Manager) but where do I specify the Exchange server info? Does it use the Exchange server info from within ActiveSync? How do I enable the AUTD from within the phone? I cannot find anything on the phone which mentions this capability.

4) I would be happy if I could sync Exchange email through GPRS or Wifi manually. When I do this with my laptop, I connect to the Exchange server through a VPN and then update. Is there anyway to get the phone to do this? Another software package that I could buy?

Thanks for your help.

Activesync works over the USB cable with your pc or over GPRS/WIFI with your exchange server.

When you first connect it to your pc, it asks if you want to set up a partnership. Say YES and the next question is whether you want to connect to an exchange server. Select the exchange server option and enter the details there. Most users sync mail, calendar and contacts with their servers (as they do with their outlook).

Once it has sync'd for the first time, you can then set the activesync behaviour on the device (ie mail "as items arrive" which is the new name for AUTD).

I think you will find that as long as your IT people have ensured the exchange server is 2003 with SP2, you will be as happy as a really happy person with push email etc.

Thanks for your response.

You mention that ActiveSync will work through my computer or through WiFi/GPRS through the Exchange server.

I have read that the new version of ActiveSync does not support WiFi. Is this true? Is this different from what you are talking about?

Thanks again.
