Guest kostas_y3k Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 What is the best for me to buy ? I already have a spv, but i live in greece and it is locked ;) So whats the best ? To buy an unlocked spv, p800 or any other phone like these two ? The only thing i dont like in spv, is that the media player is really bad, the sim lock thing and it is only 120mhz and it is so slow!!! :x :x :x :x
Guest Emad Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 Well kostas, it depends on what you want to use your phone for.. After all, you could just get a PocketPC and a T68i and get all those nice features (and more) in two neat little packages, one for each side of your coat..
Guest amo Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 Not used a p800 but what about an xda. They come locked as standard but o2 can unlock them. Or an ipaq. These both have good media players
Guest rryan Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 I'd go for a pocket pc / bluetooth & gprs phone combination. Or just get an XDA I have an iPAQ 3970. The new mediaplayer 8.5 is excellent - 320x240 @ 20fps and thats full screen in the landscape mode. ;)
Guest neilg Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 personally not a P800 as it only has a wap browser and it feels BIG compared to SPV. depends if you want a phone that can do lots of additional things or you really need all the PDA functionality i guess. P800 is edging more towards a PDA SPV more towards a phone
Guest stillwaiting Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 Hey Kostas- check out this months issue of T3 magazine. There's a review of the P800 in there, it might help you with your dilemma.
Guest yatpeak Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 THe SPV's Media Player may be bad, but it' sthe only phone I know of that can play mp3s or mpegs at all, unless you want to get a pda and a phone.
Guest HelloDave Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 Sony-Ericsson are being very cheeky on their site - i've just seen this at www.sony-erricsson.com/p800/main.htm The all-conquering P800 scores another hit as the first phone to support video playback. Tsk, what have us SPV users been able to do for ages? ;) And we can actually fit videos on our memory cards - i've heard the largest memory stick duo you can get is only 16Mb!
Guest yatpeak Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 I believe that link should be www.sony-ericsson.com/p800/main.htm
Guest yatpeak Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 I suppose I was wrong about the mp3s and mpegs, sorry.
Guest pupton Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 You can purchase 128mb cards at the moment and Sony will be releasing bigger cards shortly, at a price.... I have come from the Ipaq/T68 package that was good to the SPV which is better. The Ipaq's are just too big & heavy and it's a pain having to send long emails out using the ipaq unless you have an optional keyboard which is even more kit to carry around. I have also had a Handspring Treo 270 with GPRS in the past.... This was actually a good phone as it had a great battery life, loads of free software and it actually worked. Again though, it was too big to use as a phone hence the move to the SPV... Yer it's slow but what else is there in such a small package that allows good browsing, reliable email connectivity and DOOM! ;) Oh, forgot, I have also had the GSM jacket for the Ipaq. This BIG jacket turned the Ipaq into a mobile phone/GPRS connected pda... It was massive and it did not work properly on Orange due to the lack of sim toolkit support.... I ended up sending it back the same day after using it for only one hour....
Guest Stealthy Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 personally not a P800 as it only has a wap browser and it feels BIG compared to SPV. depends if you want a phone that can do lots of additional things or you really need all the PDA functionality i guess. P800 is edging more towards a PDA SPV more towards a phone You havent seen one have you. Wap browser my @rse.
Guest Stealthy Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 And the p800 is smaller than the spv with 5 times the memory
Guest Stealthy Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 Another thing you guys mention is video. Can you honestly say the video playback on the spv is adequate quality. When you see the difference on the p800 and compare, you wont say anything else. Jeesh I feel like I am becoming a p800 champion here and this is NOT the case.
Guest pupton Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 P800 smaller than the SPV? Thought that it was the other way round...
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 And the p800 is smaller than the spv with 5 times the memory Errr no it's not It's bigger than the 7650 housebrick (just) Look through past posts and you can see apicture of the p800 and the7650 next to each other This link was origionaly on another post http://www.celluloco.com/generic171.html
Guest Epedemic Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 P800 if you have the extra cash and like the pda'ish style of the p800... it is sooooooo much faster and a zillion times more stable... and not to mention that it runs uncertified apps out of the box (as im sure the spv wont be able to after the forthcoming upgrade) the spv is a nice phone alright... but the p800 takes the cake
Guest HelloDave Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 and not to mention that it runs uncertified apps out of the boxNot necessarily, if Orange have their way! All the rumours i've heard say it will be certified. And the p800 is smaller than the spv with 5 times the memory :?: :? I think you'll find it's quite a bit bigger!! The memory is similar - both have 16Mb internally, but the SPV uses a bit more itself for the OS, and you can get much bigger SD cards than memory sticks. You can purchase 128mb cards at the moment and Sony will be releasing bigger cards shortly, at a price.... Not memory stick duo you can't! You're thinking of the normal memory sticks; duos seem to be commonly available in 8 or 16Mb, if you can get hold of one! Sony UK's website hasn't got any info on them, while Sony US will sell you a 64Mb card for $69.95 but nothing bigger than that. For that price you can get a 128Mb SD!
Guest Yousaf Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 personally not a P800 as it only has a wap browser and it feels BIG compared to SPV. Â depends if you want a phone that can do lots of additional things or you really need all the PDA functionality i guess. Â P800 is edging more towards a PDA SPV more towards a phone it has a web browser aswell and infact u can even browse the web using the brooadbant/ or dialup connection of ur pc on the p800 using the USB or Bluetooth connection. i have an spv and i thinl its a really good phone and albiet with all the bugs but i will also be investing in a p800 it looks amazing and theres a wealth of software thats really exciting on it due to the fact theres no stupid certification requirements on it. another option you may have over the XDA is the HP Jornada 928 which i think is available on orange but only if u sign up as business user - it does all that an xda does but has more ram!
Guest neilg Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 hi all - ill stand corrected on the browser then - last p800 I saw was before xmas and it had only a WAP 2.0 browser, can anyone confirm what compatability the web browser has on the P800 (frames? flash?)
Guest DJHope Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 If the p800 does indeed support uncert apps straight out of the box, then complaints are gonna fly oranges way, are you sure that its just that theve been switched off on the network that is currently selling p800s overseas? Since according to the white paper networks are STILL gonna have the option of turning this on and leaving it off for p800 and on for SPV well i swear theirs gonna be murders! DJ Hope
Guest Gorskar Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Yes! App signing is a Joke. The p800 will be released on loads of networks and in loads of countries. Presumably they won't all have app signing switched on, so a rom could be copied from a non-signed p800 to a signed one, = making that unsigned too. The p800 will have a wider userbase, at least initially than SP2002, so if there is no app signing on the p800 then it makes no sense to have it forced on the spv. And if app signing IS off on the p800, but on the SPV then they will be getting so many emails, snailmails, phonecalls and petitions from us disgruntled lot, that their support costs will rocket!
Guest jtsaint Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Guy in carphone warehouse said that the P800 was frought with problems and that they had to send the test one back 7 times. Big issues with JVM apparently - anyway its huge!
