My iPod has died

My 15Gb 3rd gen iPod has given up the ghost. Before I just go and get a 5th gen one, I was wondering whether there are any others I should consider these days. Not that bothered about the video to be honest. Only snag is that majority of my collection is in aac format, so I would have to do a lot of converting if I go for a non iPod device.

What's up with it? Most problems can be sorted unless it's gone under the wheel of a car etc etc...

Richard.

When I switch it on, I get the Apple logo and a lot of clunking from the hard drive, and after about 10 seconds, the screen goes blank again. Sounds terminal to me!

You've tried holding down the menu button with the center key?

Hard disk error. Don't write it off just yet.... When you try using ipod updater to re-intialise in windoze do you get error 'can't mount ipod?' - try using a mac to re-format and then use windoze to re-format back. Works 7/10 times for me with so-called 'faulty' ipods :)

For the other 3/10 there are still things that can be done, most obvious of which is to replace the HDD for about

Tried the menu and center key re-install, no joy. Found a thread on the iLounge forums that recommended giving it what the Mitchell bruvvers would describe as 'a good slap' - no joy there either.

Windoze isn't recognising the device anymore, so I'll speak nicely to a mac user tomorrow, and see if that helps.

Guess a new hd is my cheapest option, but can the ones on fleabay be trusted?

Ideally you need the back off when tapping it during startup. There is quite a knack to that - the idea being you are freeing the hdd head - and this is only a help if you get a specific clunking / ticking sound or have dropped it and it's gone into 'shock'.

I wouldn't get a hdd from ebay - most muppets on there selling 'broken' ipods or ipod parts have either cobbled them together out of many broken ipods or are ham-fisted and have made the damage worse. You can fit a 4th gen HDD and run the updater and it will work, perhaps look out for a 3rd gen with a broken LCD and transplant that?

there are many websites for ipod repairs - do a google search and you should find a few.

Found a supplier of new hdd's on eBay who seems reliable (60 quid) so I'll see how I get on. Same seller also offered to add a replacement battery for an extra fiver. Can't be worse than the one that's in there at the moment!

Or use a music tool to convert all your music to MP3 and then load your favourites onto a 4gb sd card and run them on your windows device... especially if you have a copy of ppod :) - then you have the best of both worlds.

Well my eBay purchase has arrived, so I will be spending some time tonight trying to breathe new life into my corpse.

Yeah... so you can put up with not only AAC encoded, but an aac encoded mp3 encoded file. Nice.

(Tip: Don't do it)

Well, the patient has made a full recovery from its extensive surgery. If anyone needs the same I can provide details of the eBay seller, who was very quick sending the hard drive and battery from Hong Kong.

Will see if it's still around, but I've a horrible feeling it went in the bin. Will PM you tomorrow if I still have it.

Bad news I'm afraid, it's already gone for re-cyclying. Try eBay

Try sony or goodmans i'd say they're producing some good music devices at the mo

I absolutely love my Samsung YP-Z5

Only 4GB, which I find to be plenty , but the big plus in my view is the awesome battery life and the really short amount of time it takes to recharge. The only small downside, which has yet to cause me any problems, is that it only comes with a USB cable - no mains charger.

As well as the battery life, it's nice looking, and smaller than any ipod, bar the Nano and Shuffle varieties. It is also very reasonably priced :)

Or, you could go crazy and have a look at the Microsoft Zune , which should be on sale in the next couple of months...........

Sony are so-so IMO, some nice designs recently ( a1000) but the music software is useless and converts everything you chuck at it to Atrac - another lossy compression system.

Goodmans are doing some decent stuff - part of the Alba Radio group. Don't laugh...

Their brands also cover Bush, Ministry of Sound, Roadstar and they have good features at decent money. The products are all rebadged Taiwanese / Chinese ODM units but for value for money I think they are excellent.

This could become a problem if you went on holiday but perhaps like the ipod shuffle you can buy a mains seperate.

As far as I'm concerned with Ipods thats when most of their problems are sorted... after they've been under the wheel of a car. :)

iPod hate> ;)
