I've been using it for 2 days now (signed up for the beta through Microsoft Connect). And it is really nice! It integrates your msn contact with your phone contacts, your live mail available, and live messenger has been upgraded! So it now includes emoticons, file transfer, it shows contact images, and it has become really easy to switch between conversations! (just move your joystick left/right to switch conversations and up/down to scroll through your current conversation)

They also included a rss feed reader and the ability to upload pictures to your msn space straight from your phone camera/image browser!

I could upload some screenshots.. not entirely sure i'm allowed to though?

been using it for a while now - really like it.

not sure about it filling my contact book on my phone with all my crazy friends from MSN, and it doesn't like my custom domain address either - but it looks pretty swish and works rather well.

I quite like the tabbed conversations on this new version - and being able to see people's contact picture :)

also:

NEW! - The G2 Client will not install on Orange UK Smartphones. Orange only supports their own certificates, and the G2 Client is signed with a Microsoft priliveged Mobile-to-Mobile certificate which most Windows Mobile Smartphones support.

but one assumes that app unlocking the C600 (is that possible yet?) would cure that.

AND FYI for anyone else who feels it necessary to PM me asking for the exe.. you all know the rules of beta - and I'm not going to leak this. Sorry.

Any idea how to merge contacts created by live messenger beta with those i already have in by phonebook/outlook?

Now i have most of my contacts in my adress book twice: those i had before plus those added by live messenger beta.

when i tried to do it (and i must admit i have no experience in such matters) i ended up deleting all my messenger contacts from server after syncronization, so i had to add them all back manually.....

I'd love to know how to do that too, as my contacts on my phone are now hewge thanks to the 'sync' that Live carried out.

Best thing to do is post in the NG and see if you get a response from the team.

Very well - on a small screen it seems to work beautifully - tabbed browsing makes chatting with more than one person an absolute joy to do - and their avatar/display pic is displayed on the tab so you know who's who.

no screenshots allowed I'm afraid - the beta NDA states (as with all betas) that only MS are allowed to post screenies.

Indeed - upwards and onwards with new technology.

Orange [have]to release an update dont they?

No, Microsoft need to get a signed version of the app so it works with the C600's tight Security Certificate policy

and are there any screenshots from ms that i can look at.

Sure - if you join the beta. Try searching for a press release as well, or maybe even google images?

By that I ment a C550 update to WM5

Also doesnt the beta eat data? It said you should be on a 20mb plan and im on payg.

due to the various testing scenarios, yes. They expect testers to send multiple files to contacts, as well as receive them - along with contact pictures, and send images from their device to their msn spaces account using the plugin included.

testing this sort of app requires a lot of time and obviously data, as it is an internet-centric application for mobile devices.

hence why its not public beta yet, they want the quality testers to get their work done first before letting joe public loose on a release candidate.

Right so if i was only going to use this for just general chatting and the odd file transfer will this use up all my credit or just standard without the file transfers.

hey its been taken off the beta list! I cant find it.

You dont seem to understand what I mean.

To test an application like this, you are expected to use a lot of data by using ALL the functions, multiple times. As far as I'm aware, general chatting will use minimal amounts of data.

and the beta nominations closed a long time ago, you're going to have to wait for the open stages of the beta, or the final candidate.

Yeh i do get you dont worry.

I was thinkin of being sneaky and just using it for general chatting.

Hmm cant find any Screen shots yet.

i think the answer to that is a bit obvious now :) orange haven't even provided 1 rom update.... the c500 had 2 uk ones and a french one + an unofficial wm5 build for it although not from orange. the only thing us c550 owners have to play with is the tmobile rom which makes the music buttons useless. bit poor of orange not to provide the same standard they set with the c500 and abandon the c550. they've stopped selling it now and continue to sell the c500.

anyway.... rant over :)

any idea when its going to be public? reckon they'll charge for it?

Don't think so - it will probably rather replace the msn messenger currently in the windows mobile smartphones...

I guess it will be a rom update like they did with the wmp 9 to wmp 10 for the C500.

I reckon the C550 was just an silly excuse to get some more money and orange just gave up on it when they felt they had used it enough.

Incidentally - i remember reading in a mobile magazine a while back that all mobile networks are moving toward implementing a system which they hope will replace SMS. Its the same old system of using GPRS to send and receive messages and to have more presence, a la MSN. Which is why O and TMob seem to be removing MSN from their WM phones.

This of course is all still up in the air and may come to nothing. We'll have to wait and see... :)
