Guest pavankp Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Hi there, My i-mate SP5 shipped with eTrust AntiVirus installed. All it has ever done for me is irritate the hell out of me by telling me that signatures have not been updated for the last 9 days. So I say, go get updated signatures. It does that, and then reports that signatures are in fact up-to-date. The next time I restart my phone, well the whole story repeats itself. Seems like the application doesn't remember that it had checked for updates just an hour ago -- it again claims that no updates have happened for the last 9 days. Which annoys me to no end. I am about to turn this whole antivirus thing off. Is this a bad idea? Does anyone know of any viruses out there targeting Windows Mobile phones? Do you have antivirus applications running on your smartphones? If you don't do you worry that your phone may be knocked out by a virus? Assuming we all need antivirus programs for our phones: what programs work? eTrust doesn't ever seem to download a signature, which gives me the feeling it's just sitting there doing nothing. Are there better antivirus applications out there? Pavan

Pavan Hi There have been no reported viruses for smartphone (yet) AV companies are playing to peoples fears (I say) being proactive (they say) :) The 1st thing I did when I got my SP5 was to uninstall the AV application. If you're carefull you sohuld be fine, just don't download and run any strange files on your phone and you should be ok. I'm sure if viruses do start appearing you'll be able to read about it here and you can always put the application back on then. Enjoy your phone!! gR
Guest Disco Stu Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 From a Microsoft newsletter received today : Cell phone virus threats: Why they shouldn't be dismissed Several recent viruses have threatened mobile devices. Given that a data disaster is just a phone call away, what do you need to know about the threat of viruses to your mobile device? Here are five things. click to read The tip about switching Bluetooth off is probably wise as is the 'do not open unknown-sender' texts advice but I'm not particularly worried myself.
