Guest mordzy Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 Hello there, I just purchased a SP5 and as a after thought wondered if it would work on Three? perhaps a daft question.. i know video call wont work but dont use that anyway. Thanks Guys
Guest mini_man Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 I think free use a special sim card or something so it wont work in your mobile. I tried it with my unlocked C550 once.
Guest mordzy Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 (edited) crap, your joking?!?!? anyone else clarify/help Expansys site says "If bought without a tariff this phone is SIM free (handset only) and unlocked, you can use your existing SIM from any of the UK or European GSM networks (Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 etc.)." Guest mini_man Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 GSM networks ? I dont think it is a GSM Network.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 It may work, depending on your SIM. Network technology wise, no reason why it won't (without 3G features of course). P
Guest mordzy Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 GSM networks ? I dont think it is a GSM Network. No idea, lol. so im stuck with a mobile my 3 sim wont work in grrr. will it cost me much to switch networks mid contract :S??
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 Swapping mid contract will normally cost you the rest of your contract term so not really worth it. Give 3 a call and ask them what they can do? As Paul mentioned above even if the SIM did work you would only be able to connect to the O2 network as that's what 3 uses when there is no 3G signal. 3 would not be happy with you you doing that either as it costs them money.

I really wish i didnt choose 3 now.. there super value online deal made me. Tho in a way im glad i did. i have a realy good number :) shame the reception is so pants and my calls cut out all the time and the nokia had set is pants. i want a windows device again. :)((( it should be here tomorrow so i will post my findings. Guest awarner (MVP) Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 Wait a bit and look at the MTeoR no release date as yet but at least it gives 3G users hope. Shame there is not front camera for video calls but personally that does nto bother me. http://www.smartphonehistory.com/htc%20MTeoR.htm

Guest mordzy Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Sooooo.. :) i got the imate this morning and dropped in the 3 Sim. Phone boots and says "Invalid or missing SIM card. You can still make emergency calls if your service provier supports it" Gutted. Anyone have any suggestions?! thanks guys
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Unfortunately it means the phone will not work with the 3 SIM card. 3 tweak their cards and block devices from working with them. The strange thing is I have seen a device not work then placed in another device and back again and suddenly it worked. This may be down to the specific devices in question at the time. @ w411y it's all in hand already :) I just need the time to do it. + cheers guys for the comments about the site.
Guest nevawlkalone Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Unfortunately it means the phone will not work with the 3 SIM card. 3 tweak their cards and block devices from working with them. Isn't that against some sort of trading standards law? As they are dictating that you can only use phones that they endorse! Recent example i encountered to make me think this.. You can only use *our brand* lables in our printers other wise you arn't covered for warrenty if 3rd party lables cause the fault. apparently this is rubish as that would constitute business hording and monopolising the market! Just a thought... M
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Not really as all they are doing is blocking phone that can not physically recieve a 3G signal other 3G enabled devices will work ok. It's like having a betamax tape and trying to fit it in a VHS recorder. 3 only reluctantly use the 2.5G O2 network in places where they do not have proper reception and then they have to pay for it and reduce their profits.

Thats fair enough, so it would work in a HTC universal for example? Edited June 22, 2006 by nevawlkalone
Guest mordzy Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Christ... i soooo wish i hadnt given the nokia a try.. i gave up years ago in favour of the first orange SPV and used them since. i gave the 6280 a try :) i guess the imate will have to do as a sat nav device only until i can change.
