Here's a bit of fun I have been working on in my spare time, www.SmartphoneHistory.com

The idea of the site is simple, have a place where you can see all the different Smartphone devices laid out in year format with information for each device a click away.

The basics for the site (stage one) is now complete as such but I need a hand to list software versions for each device (official versions only). If you could please post or email via the feedback form on my site what device and software version you have or have had previously I would be grateful.

Feel free to have a look round some familier devices and those less well known that unfortunately never made a final release.

PPC History? Although only those that can be used as phones obviously as the list would be huge. Very handy idea mind, nice one Ash :)

Where does the Newgen D2000W sit in the history of the windows smarthpone device ?

Is it a myth ? Did it ever make production ?

I've been - unsuccessfully - trying to locate one for sometime now (It's one of my favourite eBay searches - :) )

If that's a NewGen D2000W, then it's not Windows Mobile... looks like a custom UI on Windows Embedded perhaps?

Including Windows CE mobiles opens up a whole new can of worms (not to mention a wealth of devices)! Guess we'll have to wait and see what Awarner has up his sleeve... :)

According to the Newgen site it runs Smartphone 2003 with a QVGA display. Interesting it also has an FM radio.

Some sites claim this is a Tri-band phone but the site only stares Dual-band

Also not sure where the "W" comes from in the name as the Newgen site makes no mention of it. (unless that is a Tri-band version)

Either way, that screenshot definitely isn't Smartphone, or even Smartphone proportions i'd say!

I first came across the article above from Gears site. Funnily enough he quotes Modaco as his source.

All I'm interested in is the sliding form factor. Obviously, with the passage of time and the development of Windows Mobile 5 - the possibly ficticious Newgen 2000(W) just wouldn't cut it today.

I still remain surprised at the lack of sliding WM5 devices - I stand to be corrected as ever!

Unless my Vario can be classed as such......

I gerenerally do not trust screenshots as they can be misleading.

A good example of this if the Modeo (HTC Forseer) as it's own site shows a shot that makes the screen look like it's portrait when infact it's landscape as seen here. http://www.modeo.com/spec_sheet.pdf

The screen image they show on the D2000 is strange almost lke some custom home screen is being used.
