Guest bedroomboy Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 (edited) Since getting TOMTOM 5 on my phone, i've realised it has been dialling out on the GPRS to try and get traffic updates. The amount of data it's trying to shift around is mad, and it's costing. I dont pay the extra subscription, but I am having to pay Edited June 22, 2006 by bedroomboy
Guest Confucious Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Just change the setting. Start->Settings-> Connections And either delete or just change the accesspoint
Guest bedroomboy Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Eh.. accesspoint ? - the icons in front of me are now: Beam, Bluetooth, Connections, CSD Line Type, GPRS Setting, Network Cards. I've messed with gprs setting to no avail, network cards looks, well, complex, i've no idea what any of the stuff in there is, beam I need, CSD - no clue - connections looks to be for setting up proxy servers and internet addresses. I dont see anything to do with an access point...
Guest popeyesfx Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 go to the tomtom menu, there should be a tomtom trafic icon (2 blue cars) select it and and then select disable traffic (blue cars with red cross through) this will stop it trying to update. if you tap the G at the top of the screen it will open a connectivity bubble , bottom right is settings, then tap connections, should get the following list Add a new Modem connection Set up my proxy server Manage existing connection Choose the latter and you can delete any connections buy tapping and holding

If you change this it wiil not be able to connect. But popeyesfx has already posted a fix for your TomTom problem.

Guest bedroomboy Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 (edited) :) Darn TOMTOM. Ok, I put the settings back on the PDA and connected to GPRS again - GROOVY- Went into the 2 blue cars screen and tried to setup an account - it wouldnt let me, so I setup an account on their website, and tried to enter that on the M500, still no joy. Rang TOMTOM customer support. Simple query - "how do I stop TOMTOM trying to check traffic every 5 minutes" TOMTOM: Bear with me........ "line goes dead" *rings back... asks to speak to a supervisor. TOMTOM: They are all in meetings.. When can I speak with one please, I just had the phone dropped on me, and i'm not at all pleased. TOMTOM: put your complaint in writing sir.. OOoookay, so I cant talk to anyone more senior than yourself then. TOMTOM: company policy sir, anything above me has to be in writing. Okay, so, lets get on with this query. how do I stop TOMTOM trying to check traffic every 5 minutes please TOMTOM: contact your service provider, and have them turn off your GPRS ;) but that just makes the PDA throw an error up on the screen and stops TOMTOM working, I tried that yesterday. TOMTOM: yes thats correct, you need GPRS switched on. why ? TOMTOM: to check the traffic situation ahead. I don't want to check that, I can do without that, I just need the GPS use, not the traffic updates. TOMTOM: thats your phone provider sir, contact them and have your GPRS stopped. But I want to be able to USE Gprs for web browsing every now n then, what I dont want, is TOMTOM generating Edited June 23, 2006 by bedroomboy
Guest Confucious Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 There must be a way - no one else has this problem - or maybe they do! Tech support doesn't seem that impressive though, does it? Good luck!
Guest bedroomboy Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 (edited) Maybe I was asking the wrong question. I just rang back and asked "I have created an account on your website, entering the login and password in TOMTOM gives me an error, can you assist ?" TOMTOM: enter your email address, and the password is "plus" BOOM like a bolt of thunder from the blue.... I have access to the menu... YYESSSSSSS !! *click's DISABLE TRAFFIC YESSSSSSS !!! Thank you for the gift of words.... Thank you to you Confucious, and you popeyesfx. We have reached a resolution. Quite why the woman on the previous call could not fathom this is quite beyond me - and yes, the service does seem a tad lacklustre.... at best. Edited June 23, 2006 by bedroomboy
