Goes really slow when opening Notes

I am sure that I have read about the solution to this problem before but I have searched through the posts many, many times but can't find it.

When I try to open Notes the 'egg-timer' just keeps rotating and then everything else goes really slowly. Can someone refresh my memory on how to fix this.
