Guest amnesia Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 I am trying to set up a wireless connection with my imate SP5 and my laptop (Dell Latitude D600 with builtin wireless). I have managed to get a connection between the two (how fast does the battery go down on the SP5 !! :) ) but what do I do now ? I don't think I can access the 'net through my work laptop due to firewall settings, but should I be able to see files on my laptop using my mobile, and vice versa ? Is it possible to 'activesync' between the two via wifi ? I have tried searching the forums (forii ?) and the wonderweb, but can't find anything useful. I was under the impression that I could transfer files between my laptop and phone via wifi, but can't work out how. Any help would be appreciated. Kind regards, Daniel.
Guest TripleB Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 google pdanet for one solution of going online from your laptop over the internet connection of your cell phone carrier, using a usb wire. the same people have a beta bluetooth version as well, for doing the same thing wirelessly. i haven't been able to get the bluetooth version to work, but i haven't worked too much on it and you may have better luck.
Guest vk2003 Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Is it possible to 'activesync' between the two via wifi ? I believe that it is not possible to activesync over wifi - I seem to recall that Microsoft did not build in this functionality. I hope though that I am wrong and someone more knowledgable can advise otherwise!
Guest kam_ Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 You can get your phone on your work network by bridging your WiFi adapter to your LAN adapter. I'm assuming your using Ad Hoc mode, since its the only way to connect a WiFi device to a WiFi device without an access point. Once bridged, your phone should pick up an IP address from your work network, assuming your using DHCP there. However, in order for this to work, the WiFi card has to be put into premiscuous mode. This allows broadcasts to be relayed over WiFi. Most drivers don't go into proiscuous mode when bridged, so you can force it: 1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. 2. In the command window, type netsh bridge show adapter 3. Note the number assigned to the wireless adapter and type netsh bridge set a 1 e where you substitute the number displayed in the previous step for the number 1 in this step. 4. To double check the wireless card is correctly set with Force Compatibility Mode enabled, type the netsh bridge show a command again. If you have any problems or it doesnt work, just unbridge. Firewalling doesn't have much to do with this unless its an old firewall and can't handle bridging. To address your other points, WM5 Smartphone doesn't have a network browser, so you can't actually share files back and forth. Really if you're going to be sitting right near your laptop, then just use activesync and a USB cable, or even bluetooth to do it. You'll be able to access the NET automatically (TCP only through activesync) Oh and ActiveSync over WiFi doesn't work.
