Guest cadaway Posted July 1, 2006 Report Posted July 1, 2006 I recently purchased a new phone (SP5) and duly activated my copy of TomTom 5 for it, a copy that had previously been activated on my old SP3i. Anyway, all went well until after a few weeks I went to use the software again and it asked for another activation code. I was not too worried as I had kept a copy of the activation code and assumed all I had to do was re-enter it. Unfortunately I was surprised to find that my device code had changed somehow, and as I had already activated the software twice the TomTom website would not let me do it again. :) Anyone come across this? The only thing I have done since activating the software is to app unlock the phone. Could this change the device code? Anyone know how the device code is determined? TomTom support are useless. My software is 100% legit, I still have the invoice to prove it, bit I think TomTom support think I have a pirate copy.
Guest sporkguy Posted July 1, 2006 Report Posted July 1, 2006 My unqualified guess is that the device code is generated based on the IMEI of the phone, plus the owner name perhaps? I'm probably wrong. Either way, I'd say the best thing to do, as your software is legit, is to contact TomTom directly and see if they can issue you with a new activation code.
Guest conan_troutman Posted July 1, 2006 Report Posted July 1, 2006 I have posted about this before I was forced by tomtom o buy a new copy I had it aon an mox 220 then i changed the rom thus changind my phone ID si I had to reregister tomtom not a problem the i got a qtek 8310 and and registered that with a new device code. now at this point I had used up the three "lifelines" to register tomtom but that was fine it was on he device i wanted it on so all was well until the new ROM was released so i upgraded my ROM online. this in turn changed my phone ID (bare in mind my IMEI code and user name or both identical to that befor the upgrade) i tried to reregister but the new code was not allowing it...now tomtom will hapilly issue me a new reg code if i provide them with original reciept of purchase (not a problem) and proof of new rom installation carried out by the repair center (HHHMMMMM) you see as it was done online no proof-no proof = no new code so after 6 weeks of arguing with tom i bought another copy and my wife who has my mpx 220 has the old one on that...but a few weeks ago I did a few reg edits on the qtek I application unlocked it so I could run unsigned programs on it then tom tom wanted a new activation code again so i used my second lifline on the new reg code of the newly bought product then last week i bought sprite made a back and made a restore everything worked spot on apart from one thing...yep you guessed it tomtom wanted anew activation code...this was the third one of the new software....now if i do another back up will it want a fourth code wich i can not supply nor will i be able to provide proof of purchase of a new device or of repair as neither of thse have caused the device ID to change but all through this the IMEI code and user name installed on the phone have remained the same through out so god only knows how they generate the codes for tomtom my suggestion is look at any reg changes you have made or rom updates and see if restoring them to the old setting allows you to activate the old code once more...retyurning the mpx 220 to its original rom I had on at the time of purchase of the first tomtom product was the only way to get it to work on thw mpx again as it brought up a already activated device code so simply imput the original activation key hope this helps
Guest cadaway Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 Thanks for the input. This seems like a similar scenario to my own and confirms that making changes to my registry has most probably caused the problems. It seems that TomTom's activation is seriously flawed if it will not allow you to make legitimate changes to your device without the need to re-activate. :) conan_troutman can you confirm that you have been acble to use 3 lifelines, as TomTom are only allowing me 2. FYI I too have Sprite backup installed. Doing backups is no problem but it would seem to be fairly useless if I cannot restore without needing to re-activate TomTom.
Guest sporkguy Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 God if that's the way they treat paying customers, I can see why lots of people pirate it :S
Guest JamieDow Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 (edited) I have found with my copy that I could only activate it twice. I had to wait an entire 6 months before I could install and activate it a further two times. How stupid but then I suppose it is out of date in 6 months so you will want to upgrade :) Edited July 2, 2006 by JamieDow
