Guest Iteki Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 Bout half an hour ago I was turning off the mp3 player and noticed it was doing the little "wait" symbol (circle in coloured quarters). Tried to bring up settings to check how many proggies I had open, but no luck. So I figured, I will turn it off for a few minutes, give it a bit of a rest :) Now I press the power button and nothing happens. I tried ringing to it to see if that would kick start it, no reaction. I tried holding in the power button for like 15 seconds and no reaction there either. I have a green right-led blink, which is just that it is charged and powered right? What are the steps I need to take now? I tried reading around, but I get such mixed up descriptions of what boot, reset, soft reboot, hard reboot and all this is that I am totally confused and a wee bit scared! Can you guys clear this up for me? And also please explain what levels of data-loss I can expect with each type of remedy (for example will I lose data if I leave the battery out overnight or whatever). Thanks in advance, I am sweating bullets here!
Guest Pigo Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 Have you tried the reset button? pressing that will soft reset your phone... it's just like turning it off then on again. So no huge data loss or anything Pigo
Guest Pondrew Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 I'm with Pigo. Reset the device. If that doesn't work you'll need to remove the battery for a while and try again... With regard the green flashing light, that's meant to signify that the phone is on and has signal altho from your post I take it calls are being diverted to voicemail?
Guest Iteki Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 Seems like (re divert). I stuck the stylus in the side and it is now booting, and........ we're in! Phew! Thanks guys! While I have the thread open (and since I will probably run into these problems in the future, what is this malarkey about comm-button and say-button and turn around 3 times and shake it all about? Can you give me a run down of the other types of boots/resets etc? Youse are lifesavers, I appreciate it!
Guest Laser_iCE Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 This is just the phone freezing :) While it's not a common issue, it's still nothing to be totally concerned about ;) Hard reset: typically means resetting the phone memory so that it is then as if you just got it from the store, ala "Factory Settings". Soft reset: refers to simply rebooting the phone, either by the power button or the reset button in the side. These are purely my interpretations of each one, someone may have a more in depth definition for both ... Also, in regards to what sort of data loss you're looking at when soft resetting -- the only thing you'll be losing is either documents that you are working on if they are open at the time of reboot and haven't been saved, and that's about it really. So anything that you're editting at the time, whether it be a document, an image, or perhaps a save game (if you're playing a game and haven't saved yet), then you will lose the data associated with it. Once again, someone can probably give you a more precise/correct answer :D
Guest jimbouk Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 Spot on. A soft reset is purely a restart, which means the device will lose any open unsaved changes - and is the first thing you should do if the device starts to exhibit weird behaviour. This will fix 99% off memory and similar problems. A hard reset resets it to exactly as it left the factory - or resets to exactly how it was when you last updated the rom (if applicable). This means you lose all personalisation, all programs installed by you, all pics, all sounds etc saved in the phones memory. Anything on the SD card is safe though. You should only hard reset when near your pc - so once it has restarted, you can reset up the activesync and get all your contacts and appointments etc back on the device. It used to be (with WM2003 devices) a soft reset was a good idea every few days and a hard reset was a good idea once every couple of months as the devices got slower and more messed up - but I havent hard reset my Prophet now since April (when I loaded the new rom) and I realised the other day I havent soft reset it for about three weeks. Well done WM5!
Guest Alsicole Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Yeah. You know when you ring the IT department cos your computer's playing up and they always tell you to switch it off and switch it back on again. This is the phone equivalent! :)
