I could use some help with a problem connecting my Qtek 8310 to my laptop using ActiveSync 4.2.

I've followed all of the relevant threads I can find, followed the troubleshooter tool, and read all of the relevan tips pn the MS site (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx) that I could find and still can't get ActiveSync to recognize my phone through a USB connection.

I have no firewall software in place and no virus protection running since this is a brand new laptop, and have ensured all of the activesync settings on the device and the computer are set according to the tips from MS. Despite this, I still can't seem to do any synchronizing. I had the same problem with version 4.1 of ActiveSync yesterday, so I downloaded the new version but the problem persists.

Is there something fundamental I'm missing? Besides changing computers, the only unusual thing to happen to my phone was a recent repair to change a broken screen - however, I can't imagine that this would be relevant.

Any wisdom out there would be very appreciated! I'm feeling quite out of synch.

Laptop running XP ? SP2 ? Just checking. Standard OS on your phone ?

I'm no expert but I would delete any ActiveSync partnerships on the laptop and uninstall AS. Then do a file/folder search and remove absolutely everything with AS in the name. Reboot phone & laptop.

Re-install ActiveSync and don't connect phone till prompted. Follow instructions etc...

Does Windows detect your device at all ? You are using mini-USB to USB port with no hub in between ?

Any error codes thrown up ?

Thanks for response Disco Stu. Let me try to clarify a couple of details for you.

Laptop running XP ? Yup

SP2 ? Laptop is new. I assume it is running SP2 but I don't know how to confirm this.

Standard OS on your phone ? Yup, running WM5.0

You suggest that I delete AS partnerships. I'm clearly daft but I have no clue how to do this. Once I do this, I can scan for all AS files, but are we talking about all files beginning with AS? Any types of files to narrow this down? (I presume I don't have to delete perfectass.jpg just because it has AS in it!)

A key detail that one of your questions highlights is that I'm not sure my computer does detect my device at all. Perhaps this is the more significant issue and hopefully then a simpler fix. But the USB mini to USB chord is definitely not the problem since it works with other devices and is the same one that used to work with the same phone on my old computer. When I have the phone plugged in, and go to My Computer, the computer doesn't seem to show the phone as a device with removable storage. It does show "Mobile Device" under Other but describes it as a system folder. Once I click on the mobile device icon, it shows an empty folder so I don't think my computer even recognizes my phone as a device. Is this a driver issue?

Under Network Connections, my computer seems to recognize the phone since it shows up as a Local Area Connection "Windows Mobile-based device #2"

Finally, as for error codes. I have seen none. But when I run the troubleshoting tool that comes up when running ActiveSync 4.2 it checks the following:

Compatibility Scan Status: Complete

RNDIS/Serial Driver Scan Status: Complete

Network Configuration Scan Status: Complete

Device Scan Status: Complete

Installed Firewalls Scan Status: Complete

TCP/IP Port 990 Scan Status: Complete

Error Code Scan Status: Complete

The diagnostic tool then gives me a message that says:

Unable to establish a connection between the PC and the device. Get up-to-date solutions to common connection problems. Please click the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65257

--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

No additional known issues have been found.

If you are still experiencing problems please send the results to Microsoft to help improve future versions.

The link seems to give tips for problems relating to inability to receive data through port 990. I followed all of the tips though and am still unable to synch my device.

I hope this clarifies my problem. Hopefully there is something elementary that I'm overlooking.

I resolved the problem yesterday. It was a simple fix: re-installing SP2 and TC/PIP. No problems with ActiveSync. Thanks for the help.

Nice to see it is sorted. How are you finding the phone???

Definitely enjoying the phone. Great graphics, nice features, mostly easy to use. Without generous help from folks in this forum, I'd have been lost.

There are still a few things I'm trying to figure out such as:

1. Using the wifi feature on my home network - I just added a 10 digit WEP key to the network, now the phone can't connect despite key being entered

2. Whether I should install the ROM upgrade, and if so, where an expansys purchaser can get it.

3. How to unlock the phone to accept programs like pockettv

But trying to figure this stuff out is part of the fun I'm having with the phone. My favourite apps I've added are Papyrus and Facade. Nice.

Cheers
