I have setup my Imate SP5 to check for emails every 15mins.

The account I have this setup on is only used on my mobile phone so it would not get much mail. When it dose receive an email it only downloads the headers. At this point I will turn on the WIFI and download the entire mail that way.

I am on the o2 Ireland network.

Is there a charge for checking your mail or is it free until you actually download something like the headers or the email itself.

When I am charging the phone at the computer the check is carried out using the broadband connection on the computer.

I believe that you will be chrged for using GPRS (I have an O2 Ireland sim and have been). Check with your service provider to see if they include bundled GPRS. I would also not automatically check every 15mins as that will eat up GPRS.

If you have wifi access why not just turn it on check and turn it off? (If free obviously)

You will be charged one way or another for using GPRS - even if there are no emails to download, or you only download headers.

Thanks for that chaps.

I think the best thing to do is disable the feature.

Just checked out 1 or 2 sites on the net and it seems not so.

You are only charged for what you actually transfer and not charged for just being connected.

On the o2 website it discribes how to setup the Blackberry exactly the same way I set up my SP5. It even says to set it to check for emails every 15 mins.

By just downloading the headers you are reducing the information sent over GPRS in turn reducing the overall cost. I just want it to tell me there is mail there.

That's right but every time you check your mailbox you are transferring data over the connection - so you will be charged.
