Guest Lynswin Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 Last night I downloaded trial versions of Conduits Music Player and Pocket Minds Pocket Music to try and find an alternative to WMP. Everything seemed OK until someone called me today on my SPV C550 and instead of my nice MP3 ringtone I got an intermittent 'ping' (a sort of 'system error' ping!). I went to menu>settings>sounds and looked at the ringtone and it still said the correct MP3. I tried to change it but none of the MP3s will play now in this folder (they always used to give you a preview) only the original tones that came with the phone. Also, when I press 'done' which usually exits this, the screen just stays there and I have to press the home button to get back (unless I have one of the default sounds selected - not sure if this is relevant). Even if I select one of the default tones and exit correctly, when someone calls I still just get a 'ping'. I have now uninstalled both music players and rebooted my phone but the problem still remains. Any help would be greatly appreciated (preferably not a hard reset as I have sooooo much stuff on there!) Thanks Lynda
Guest Disco Stu Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 No need for that. Use Binarys Smart Explorer to reassociate MP3s with Windows Media Player. Hit File, Open, Manage File Types. You should still be able to use alternative media players but you just don't want the third party ones to take over the file association. I think... ;) In fact the inbuilt File Manager will do it too ! :)
Guest Lynswin Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 OK, many thanks for that - now you come to mention it when I installed one of the other players (not sure which) it said something about associating files. I have just gone to file manager, if I scroll to one of my MP3s then go file>associate (or file>open with) and then select WMP, it comes up saying 'cannot play the file. The file is either corrupted or the player does not support the format you are trying to play'. However, if I just open WMP and select the file to play, it just plays fine (Well it seems a bit quieter than it used to but that may be something else!!!!). This is starting to drive me mad now!!! Any more clues? Thanks again Lynda
Guest Disco Stu Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 Did you reboot after reassociating ? Assuming you did, try Binarys' Smart Explorer - it's shareware and better than File Manager - because you can actually use the 'Manage File types' function to do this universally. It might solve your problem.
Guest Lynswin Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 I think I may need a more idiot proof description of how to this as what I have just done never worked!! I downloaded Smart Explorer and ran it. I scrolled to an MP3 (not sure if I needed to do this) then I went to File>open>manage file types. I scrolled down to MP3 which although had no description beside, when I clicked on 'menu>edit file type, it had 'command to execute' as "windows\wmplayer.exe"%1. So I just clicked on 'done', exited and rebooted but still it has not worked. :) Am I still doing something wrong? Lynda
Guest Disco Stu Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 Lynda, that's exactly what I was suggesting so I'm confused as to why it doesn't work. Your phone has reassociated MP3s with Windows Media Player so your files should work as ringtones. I'm cfonfused now but this has come up before plenty of times so I'll have a dig around.

Your phone has reassociated MP3s with Windows Media Player so your files should work as ringtones. I'm cfonfused now but this has come up before plenty of times so I'll have a dig around. Just as an addition to this - everything that I can manage to get to play on the phone is now playing really quietly and the volume buttons on the side of the phone (mainly for earpiece volume) don't appear to be working/responding. The other thing is that if I reboot my phone, when I go back into 'sounds' it has automatically reset the ringtone to the first MP3 file on the list (not a small ringtone MP3 but a full song). Not sure if any of this is relevant but I am sure the more info you have the better!! I look forward to hearing from you if you can find the problem Thanks Lynda
Guest gpcarreon (MVP) Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Hi there. :) Maybe you can try some registry fixes for your MP3 and volume problems http://www.gpcarreon.com/?p=302 Use the volume dialog and MP3 fix http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/1843/snap3724sg.jpg
Guest Lynswin Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Fan flippin tastic!!!! :) The fixes have worked!! Thanks very much for all of the help. I will certainly be keeping this little wonder fix!! Best wishes Lynda
