Guest cng Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 Well, I have decided to get a MS WM5 Smartphone for my girlfriend to turn her gadget-loving like me. However, myself, have only used Treo 650, Sony Clie, and Dell X51v so I have no idea how a smartphone differs. I imagine that it would be much simplified since there is no touchscreen. From the screenshots, I can see that my guesses arent too far off. However, I've heard good things about Smartphone edition and should be enough power for my girlfriend and not overwhelm her with things to learn. Its a great stepping stone, as I see it. Now, if my girlfriend doesnt like the phone, I would be taking it over so I want a device that I need as much as she does. The only reason I sold my Treo 650 is because it did not have Wifi and data rate in Canada makes it a luxury for the rich and fully business-oriented only. This is why the Tornado is my only choice at the moment. And so, that concludes my introduction so here on with my questions: 1. Does it matter if I choose Qtek, Imate or T-mobile? Example: the ROM, customer service (warranty, etc etc), package (headset quality, etc) 2. a. Can I remove branding? (the logo on the smartphone unit itself and on rom) b. Can I convert using a Faraday full housing? I love the C600's appearance but with no Wifi, I'm not gonna even consider. 3. I have heard of people overclocking to use Skype with the Tornado but how about Voice Command? 4. I'd imagine its easier to unlock smartphones, is there a way to do so for free? Thanks in advance.

Example: the ROM, customer service (warranty, etc etc), package (headset quality, etc) I-mate's generally have more roms / support available but you can use any rom with any device in that family to an extent if you know how. And if you don't know how google is very useful. :) Service providor supplied phones are the best for warranty reasons - they have ongoing revenue from you as a customer to protect. Imate and Qtek's repair service is patchy and outsourced to third parties. Service providor phones also have economies of scale and are subsidised whereas a qtek or an imate is not. 2. a. Can I remove branding? (the logo on the smartphone unit itself and on rom) b. Can I convert using a Faraday full housing? I love the C600's appearance but with no Wifi, I'm not gonna even consider. Metal units can have the logos removed with a sugarcube or fibreglass pencil. (sp5m, 2125 ) Plastic fronted units are not - or at least I haven't tried. The rom branding can only be changed for a different rom, or you can edit your own pictures into the startup sequence. The only thing easily fittable into a c600 casing is the 2125 so you would only loose the hump. To fit a wifi enabled SDA or sp5m you need a c600 keypad circuit also as the original won't fit the new casing. You could get a UK SDA casing to fit to the US version to remove the hump if you wanted. 3. I have heard of people overclocking to use Skype with the Tornado but how about Voice Command? Dunno, only heard of the need to overclock for skype with PPC's. Never done it. 4. I'd imagine its easier to unlock smartphones, is there a way to do so for free? Easy peasy - check this site. Or buy a phone already unlocked ( sp5m ). Richard
Guest cng Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 Thanks for all your help Richard. I will probably be making the purchase in September (my girlfriend's birthday) and if I like it a lot, I'll buy one for myself too. By then better Smartphones and Pocket PC phones would be out and hopefully the price would be lowered. Come to think of it, its only a few months before the Tornados turning a year old. With her new phone, I hope she would enjoy mp3s, movies, and web wherever she goes ^^. That camera would be enough for those picture moments too. I still dont know where I can find the cheapest sp5m, or 8300 or those full housing with keypad conversions. In Canada, on some forums I can find a used SDA for 300 CAD with 1 GB Mini-SD, which should be enough for me. However, if I were to buy a new sp5m or 8300, it would be $500-600 shipped (price does not include memory cards either). And come to think of it, I do have a smartphone, Nokia 6620. Its just that I've never used it as a smartphone or installed too many things. How does WM5 feel compared to Symbian Series 60?

Guest The Doctor Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Sorry for the question, but which is the difference between TMobile SDA and I-mate SP5m? thx there isn't a difference :D Phil
Guest martin Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Just make sure you stick with the T-mobile SDA phone from the US as it's an HTC tornado (with a hump :D ). The T-mobile SDA phone from Europe is a much earlier WM2003 device and I think the T-mobile SDA II from Europe is an HTC Hurricane which is still not as advanced as the HTC Tornado. Worth noting when you are searching via the Internet.
