Is there any way to trace the activity of either an IP address or a user account or the length of time that a computer is on the network!

Also i need to know the different programs that it is running during this time!

Is it possible?

You can still do it now, we use something called remote admin....

I just need to know what a guy at work is doing as time sheet fixing is suspect...he claims he works 6 day weeks but we believe he doesnt!

The only problem with Remote Admin, is that it show a red R in the sys tray when someone is remotely monitroing your screen. There is a way of disabling this, but I dont know how.

True and i'd have to physically sit and watch what he does.

I want something that produces a report on what he does...any one any ideas?

Why don't one of the people in your office go into work on Saturday and see if he is there?

He works from home (he claims) with a router.

What kind of programs are you talking about?

IM, P2P?

As for IP logging, why not get a trial version of something like SurfControl Web Filter installed on your network?

You can also monitor IM and P2P with this sort of software.

Is he using a VPN client to log into your network? If he does then surely you should be able to see him log in to the network.

As the poster above says if he comes into your network you should be able to see him in something like SurfControl and you can monitor his activity?

I'd tread carefully if I were you, from a legal point of view.

To confirm the use of his PC when he claims he is you would have to perform some type of monitoring of his PC (either on the PC or remotely).

Any monitoring you do is subject to either the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 or (less likely) the Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice) (Interception of

Communications) Regulations 2000.

Generally you won't have a problem if he has signed and agreed to an AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) that says his employer reserves the right to monitor computer use (assuming that the AUP has been drafted properly regarding the above legislation and states what monitoring will be used for).

The DTI website did have a PDF with brief details about these regs regarding their impact on writing an AUP, but they seem to have moved it at the moment.

If his employer doesn't have a good AUP and you do monitor his PC use to find out that he isn't working when he says he is (aiming to use that info as a basis for disciplinary action), he could argue that such monitoring was a violation of his privacy and therefore any information gained from it cannot be used against him. At worst, if he ends up being sacked over this he could bring an unfair dismissal case against his employer, which he may end up loosing anyway but it would cause hassle all round.

Sorry to sound so harsh, but I'm in the process of writing an AUP for some of my clients at the moment, and it's a bit of a legal minefield!

Agree you should get an AUP sorted, but in the mean time you can always get your HR dept to dend out an e-mail saying you are going to be setting one up, and as part of that process you will be installing software that will monitor how your firms network and internet access is being used.

If all he's doing is surfing instead of working, this may be enough to curb his habits.
