Guest spider Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 (edited) You know the internet Edited August 4, 2006 by spider
Guest Samsonite Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 WiFi is a registered trademark of the WiFi Alliance. As a technology description, it is better to think of a wireless LAN. (Wireless computer networking) What Spider is saying is correct but if you have a wireless LAN connection at home AND wireless LAN capability in your phone then you can setup a wireless network to access the devices. WiFi doesnt necessarily need the internet to be useful. Imagine if you had a load of movies on your PC hard drive and wanted to watch them in another room in your house but couldnt run cables... WiFi could be the answer!! Two devices with WiFi capability and the jobs done!! Consider WiFi as a replacement for normal ethernet cables.... Having said all that, most people have an internet connection at home with a wireless LAN router connected to it and then access that internet connection using the WiFi technology.
Guest forza haifa Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 THANKS alot... u really helped me!! 2 last questions... im thinking about buying a wi-fi smartphone now im woundering if i would be able to connect to ANY wireless connection or a hotspot?? or Before that i'll need to connect the wi-fi to a main wireless operator in my home or something like that?
Guest Samsonite Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 (edited) if you buy a WiFi enabled Smartphone like the Imate sp5 or Qtek8310 ( the same device by the way) then you will be able to access hotspots out and about as well as use your OWN personal wireless LAN equipment at home. No operator 'provides' WiFi coverage for your home, it is a piece of kit you buy yourself and then connect that to you internet connection. There are security features on any WiFi equipment and that is what prevents you connecting to equipment that you shouldnt and what protects your network from others. Guest smitcopleyhill Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Don't mean to hijack the thread but does anyone know how common these "hotspots" are in England?
Guest spider Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 just remember that you might have to pay for the hot spot connection when connecting to the internet...for exampel in the airport... the price depends on the policy and the owner of each hotspot...

Almost all Motorway service stations, some bigger petrol stations... These are ones thats i have come across and i dont get into London all that often where i understand they are popping up almost everywhere!! Oh yeah - Hotels is an obvious one... at the end of the day, it can be source of revenue for any organisation. I've been charged upto

Guest Samsonite Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Other than the IMate SP5 and the Qtek 8310, What other GSM smartphones that can use windows mobile OS and can use wifi? Is there a list somewhere? Thanks in advance! i'm not aware of any... I think those two (which are the same base model btw) are the only ones. Wizard, Universal, Hermes, Eten m600, Prophet... the list goes on!! that new pdadb.net site is a winner for checking stuff like this out - as well as awarners smartphone history site.
