can't seem to get the symbol key option to work - it's marked as a shift on the space bar - but won't work. Am I dumb or is it the machine? Can't find anything about this in manual.

Try typing a $ sign then pressing the symbol button, you'll see that it rotates through different currency symbols (including the good old

Each symbol key has more than one symbol and the symbol key scrolls through them eg different kinds of brackets. The symbols are stored in a file which can be edited so you can add your own.
