I have finally got fed up of the low storage memory available on my Orange C600 with the AKU2 ROM. I tried to install NETCF2 last night, and it failed due to running out of storage memory, even though I had chosen to install to a storage card. The failed install seems to have caused me to lose over 1MB of phone storage memory, yet on checking in explorer I can't find where the extra space is being taken up. I have deleted everything I can possibly get rid of.

I have read that the Imate SP5 ROM leaves you with a lot more phone storage space, so I am looking into the possibility of flashing my phone with that. I have done a search and have been left somewhat confused as to the process I should be following.

1) How much extra storage should flashing the Imate ROM give me over the Orange ROM?

2) Is there a (very!) idiot-proof guide to the whole process of flashing an Orange C600 that has the AKU2 ROM already installed?

Thanks for any help!

Jason.

I couldn't really answer your question - but would like to add: isn't it possible to install the .net framework 2.0 to the storage card with the new release, ie service pack? At least it says so on the Microsoft web site.

Myself, I'm down at 2pc of the IPSM now, and I havent a clue how it happened... I have emptied the cache and sought for files to delete.. I deleted installation files in the appmgr folder, the files added since the last time I put things from that folder as a backup on the pc. I had 15pc IPSM memory one month ago, so I don't know where >1mb of storage is gone... Unbelievable.

I did choose to install to the storage card. However, in order to install it requires a certain amount of phone storage memory, which I obviously did not have! I assume it uses it to temporarily hold CAB file contents. If you are installing a large file, it therefore needs plenty of phone storage. If you don't have enough it aborts. On checking the stats after it aborted it seems it made about 1.5MB of my phone storage disappear. It didn't come back after a soft reset.

I'm down to about 1.3MB. I have absolutely no idea where it is disappearing to, as I can't find any files that weren't there before.

I figure that if I install the SP5 ROM it'll give me some more storage to play with, although I don't know how much extra it gives you. Apparantly the phone is a little quicker to operate as well without all the gunk in the Orange ROM.

I'll vouch for the SP5 rom too. OK, so you've got a few annoyances like "iMate SP5" appearing everytime you power on/off but aside from those I don't regret dumping the Orange rom for a second.

A2DP is a superb reason to upgrade, removal of the Orange branding and all it's deep rooted evilness is another.

The guide on SPV-Developer's wiki is spot on, and provided you've got the signed registry editor you're laughing when you've flashed the phone.

Why is the SP5 ROm better? What difference advantage does it have over the Orange ROM?

I've found it faster and less cluttered with crap, it's got the AKU2 update (which OK the Orange ROM does have... if you use their updater but then you've got a pain-in-the-butt route to getting it app/sim unlocked), and if you're not an Orange user the best feature is losing the Orange branding - Orange menu, apps, favourites in IE, WAP/GPRS settings (OK, so I'm just being anal now)...

Don't know how this thread didn't turn up in my search, or if it did, how I missed it!

Flash Imate SP5 ROM on Orange AKU2

I just tried it and it has worked. On starting up File Manager it shows 14.07MB of phone storage available, against 11.03 on the Orange ROM after a hard reset. So the SP5 ROM gives a 3MB saving. Not earth-shattering but given how fast this memory can disappear, worth having.

Difficult to judge the speed of using the phone in such a short time, but it does initially seem a little quicker to respond.

I just need to get see if Sprite restores my programs etc as per their instructions and I should be through, hopefully with more memory than before!

Wait two seconds!! The I-mate firmware might be better than the Orange firmware. But the I-mate firmware isn't that great either. I posted several reasons for why you should choose Qtek firmware instead in THIS thread.

Be a smart kid and listen to uncle killerost :) Get a Qtek 8310 rom instead.

And you can go HERE for a step-by-step guide to upgrading.

Thanks for the recommendation! I have already flashed my phone with the imate ROM though, and reinstalled all my programs. Down to 4.5MB available phone memory which is still about 3MB better than I had with the Orange ROM.

I'm not sure the phone is any faster. Maybe a little but nothing much in it. Booting seems quicker.

Unfortunately the Sprite Backup didn't work due to me installing a newer version of the Backup software. You have to restore with the same version. Unfortunately I didn't have the older version so had to spend a while reinstalling everything manually. I now have everything running OK and a backup made so hopefully I won't be needing to do any more hard resets in future.

If I ever reflash for some reason I'll give the Qtek ROM a try.

Things to remember flashing with a non Orange ROM will invalidate your warranty. As for other ROMS the imate ROM can be downloaded from the imate ftp site which is accessible to the general public but the Qtek can only be offivially downloaded from the Qtek site which you have to register your Qtek to get access to the ROM.

Remember the site rules guys only links to official sources are allowed.
