Guest jd Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 hi all, and congrats for all of u guys for making it happen, just found out one bit of informations that might be useful to some of the spv users. in case u r using active sync with zone alarm even though zone alarm is disabled it can create some bug that allow u not to connect to active sync, the way to avoid this, is to launch zonealarm then shut it down again. worked for me, as zonealarm sometimes even though disabled can run on the background for some reason well keep it up and i hope this solved some issues with active sync ;)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 The main software engine in zonealarm, i forget what its called (interlink monitor or something?) is a pan in the arse to shut down. Like you say just disabling it still leaves the background process running :/ Makes for fun when trying to browse a LAN workgroup too. Either way like you say it has to be fuly shut down before activesync will see the SPV ;)
Guest Gorskar Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 Use Tiny personal firewall instead. Its powerful, secure (proper application level filters) and configurable +its free, which is nice ;)
Guest dma Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 I have no problems with ZA Pro and ActiveSync
Guest Ed Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 The one that comes with XP is fine for the vast majority of things.
Guest cepheus1 Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 Zone Alarm works perfectly with my SPV and Active Sync....and once you take the time to configure Zone Alarm it works just fine with my LAN as well....just a case of a little perseverence and reading the help files ;)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 As good as i'm sure the XP firewall is, I wouldn't trust it as far as i could throw my PC ;) I'm happy enough with Zonealarm for now, when my PC isn't behind my ADSL/router firewall
Guest arawak Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 As good as i'm sure the XP firewall is, I wouldn't trust it as far as i could throw my PC ;) I'm happy enough with Zonealarm for now, when my PC isn't behind my ADSL/router firewall The one that comes with XP is crap! It does ok for some things but is intrusive for a lot of others (i.e. sending a file via msn). I personally use Norton Internet Security which is superb. It's incredibly easy to use and has never caused me a problem. I used to use Zonealarm prior to this but found NIS is much better. Also used to use BlackIce Defender but again found NIS to be superior. Cheers A
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 Running Blackice Defender is as good as running Word and saying your PC is more secure...
Guest arawak Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 Running Blackice Defender is as good as running Word and saying your PC is more secure... I'd agree with you there. Being able to ping your own IP when using BlackIce shouldn't happen! Still at least NIS works and is certainly secure. I also had about 70,000 attacks on my PC in one night when using BlackIce and it was obviously not stopping them  Part of the reason why I switched to Zonealarm after the attacks was how secure it was meant to be. I just find NIS more intuitive and does exactly what is says on the box ;)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 Heheh, I had the little pop-up ping notification on in Zonealarm once, I was portscanned and it was fun to see "Notification 1 of 1" fly up to "Notification 500 of 500" within 60 seconds. Still protected my PC from detection too...
Guest HelloDave Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 I use ZoneAlarm too, and as long as you give ActiveSync full permissions it works fine. Only problem is I have to take my internet security level down to medium otherwise ZA 2.6 refuses to work with ICS on my LAN - Grrr  And yes, I could upgrade to ZA 3, but that totally screwed up my PC last time I tried it, and even the pro version still didn't work with ICS!

ZoneAlarm 3 acted up on my PC which is why I now use NIS. I haven't had a single problem since it's been installed and having tested the security is has withstood everything thrown at it so far. Needless to say with a decent and determined hacker no system is fool proof but NIS works great for me.
Guest HelloDave Posted January 24, 2003 Report Posted January 24, 2003 ZoneAlarm 3 acted up on my PC which is why I now use NIS. I haven't had a single problem since it's been installed and having tested the security is has withstood everything thrown at it so far I did think of getting NIS at one point, but that means I'd actually have to spend money on it, and i'm penniless ever since I got my SPV  Another reason is that my LAN used to act up so often with the shared internet connection it was untrue, and now it's working so i'm quite happy to leave it and not even breathe on any settings! I did think the problem was Mcafee virus scan though (crap software!) so maybe £50 for the NIS and antivirus pack isn't so bad after all...
