Guest Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 hey all Just want to Rip a dvd and convert to wmv for to look at on me smartphone. I have pocketdivx encoder and I thought that would rip a dvd but it doesn't want to do it for me. I can use windows movie maker to convert .avi or .mpg to .wmv but what do any of you recommend to rip the DVD to file? preferably free of course :) thanks for any iders gR
Guest genaldar Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 DVDDecrypter will rip the contents, then you have to encode it. I don't think pocket divx will do it, nor will windows media encoder. What I would do is make a regular divx then run that through pocket divx.
Guest mavisdavis Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Try this app gerryr LATHE made by the same people who made beta player (TCMPE) or what ever its know as these days ;-) rips a dvd in about 45mins to smartphone or ppc
Guest goochy1 Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Off the subject but mavisdavis you made it past 1000
Guest pd.ryder Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 DVDShrink is a free app that'll decode/decrypt the DVD then run it through PocketDivX to get a suitable size/bitrate for your phone. Or you could use DVDShrink and then run the resulting .avi through Windows Movie Maker with the output selected for "PPC" (gives a 240x320 resolution). Either way will work a treat. I find TCPMP far more adaptable when it comes to playing different format videos (and compressed audio). Have fun :) ;)
Guest Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Thanks for all the replies guys! My problem was trying to use pocketdivx to directly encode from a DVD. I used DVDDecrypter as suggested to rip the DVD then pocketdivx (a free version of LATHE from the same guy I think) to encode to avi then finally windows movie maker to reduce down to .wmv Its a pity my smartphone cant really play anything much higher than 228kb/sec bitrate. I wonder if the better processor in the metor can handle better quality vid. thanks again for the help :) gR
Guest pd.ryder Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 To be honest, I've been very pleased with the watchable quality of video that my C550 can handle (I'm not sure exactly what the Dopod S300 is). I'd hate to suggest something as dodgey as file sharing but my 550 will handle anything Bearshare can throw at it :) (PocketDivX sorts out large files).
Guest genaldar Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Lathe is the updated version of pocketdivx encoder, it is not as far as I know from the tcpmp people. It does look like the perfect software and it is only $8. DVD shrink doesn't encode dvds to divx, xvid or avi, it creates a compressed dvd image for burning dual layer movies unto single layer discs.
